4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and accessible historical thriller, 2 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Malpas Legacy (Paperback)
Predominantly set in Ireland and spanning the best part of the 20th century, The Malpas Legacy is an accessible thriller that managed to be both a page-turner and (relatively) unpredictable. As is usually the case, however, development of the characters was sacrificed in order to maintain dramatic tension. The result is a "cast" that could come straight out of a cross between Ballykissangel and Twin Peaks. I can already picture the film or tv adaption! The novel uses "flashbacks" (the vehicle being a series of case books written in the early 20th century), to weave together both the "present" (the mid-1970s) and the past. Whilst an overused form, the story does not suffer for it and it is not until the last few pages that the inconsistencies between the two worlds are clarified. My only gripe about this otherwise excellent novel is that the ending, whilst unexpected (at least to me), was perhaps a little too neat!

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex and sinister tale, 20 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Malpas Legacy (Paperback)
This book gripped me from the start and I'd never come across Sam Llewellyn's work before. It's very dark and sometimes frightening, and the description of emotions is both poetic and powerful. The jumps between time periods can be confusing and I have to admit I was rather lost in the middle of the Irish question, but the fact that I was desperate to know what happened kept me glued! There was some points which I couldn't believe, such as the mistake the protagonist makes between the two women in the garden, but the ending is superb and very exciting.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a gripping historical thriller, 5 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Malpas Legacy (Paperback)
Picked up by chance I found this a gripping read! Set in England and Ireland it traces the dark history of Helen's heritage that is connected to Malpas - a grand decaying mansion in Ireland - which she has inherited. Delving into her past is an old friend who discovers more than anything he bargained for.

This story nicely dovetails between the present and the past Malpas, stirring up old tales and history from old manuscripts left there.
