O'Connell writes vividly and with passion. What's more she knows a good plot when she sees one. At first glance this may seem like quite standard detective fiction, but O'Connell turns it on its head. She knows how to shock without being gratuitous and she has a great eye for characters. Mallory is mad, bad and dangerous to know and yet all the time there is a hint of softness underneath, you so want to believe that she is not as cold and damaged a human being as she makes out. She reminds me of the Terminator made flesh!

I have enjoyed all of the Mallory books. They require a bit of thought but the characters are superbly portrayed and the story line is ingenious.

This is the first novel in the sequence of four containing Kathy Mallory. There are a number of features which make this book special:
i) it contains a detective story with a plot of great complexity and subtlety
ii) it is an intense thriller which grabs you by the throuht on the first page and only begrudgiongly lets go at the end.
iii) characters of great depth, in particular Detective Mallory.
iv) this all takes place against a very vivid backdrop, thereby punching a very strong message, about the nature of the human condition.
In summary this book contains the three fundamental requirements of a crime story: plot, characters and social comment. Therefore you should buy it.

An intriguing character with an interesting story line
Mallory is a fascinating invention and the supporting cast are wonderful too. One of the best books I have read.
