Adds a new dimension to your Mallorca holiday, 13 Jan 2009
This review is from: Mallorca (Landscapes) (Paperback)
My wife and I have just come back from our second walking holiday in Mallorca. As our previous Sunflower Guide was over 10 years old we treated ourselves to the latest edition, and weren't disappointed. Valerie Crespi-Green's guide is a sure way to a add a new dimension to your Mallorca holiday with car tours, picnics and, above all, excellent walks in the more scenic parts of the island - mostly in the mountainous north. We did six of the walks in the book on this trip - some of them in curtailed versions due to the short winter days. All are highly recommended, and take you into corners of the countryside that you might well not discover otherwise. Directions are easy to follow and - a big plus not always true of Sunflower books - we found that the author's times were more or less the same as our own - which takes on extra importance in the winter. An excellent Sunflower Guide!

Good for walks and picnic spots, 27 Mar 2009
This review is from: Mallorca (Landscapes) (Paperback)
We have used various Sunflower guides over several years and have always found them useful. In particular there are little maps showing each walk this is particularly useful in Mallorca, where until recently it has been difficult to obtain good accurate walking maps. It has also enabled us to confidently go for walks in areas where we haven't got a detailed map. Now that we have 2 young children who cannot walk very far we find the picnic spots very useful as they often have a little stroll which is just right for little people.

Best Mallorca guide for the offtrack traveler, 11 Feb 2010
This review is from: Mallorca (Landscapes) (Paperback)
"Last year we won a free trip to Mallorca in a prize contest organized by a local mall. We were very excited about it and wanted to apply the same rule for this trip as for the other two out-of-country trips that we had, which was "prepare, prepare, prepare". Not being very high on money resources (as probably most Eastern Europeans in their 20s ') we searched for guides on the internet, local libraries and bookstores. We skimmed through every bit of information, we saved all we could, and we managed to gather a lot of useful information. However, something was missing. Last year's trip to Paris was a wonderful trip mostly because of the short walks that we discovered in a travel book. We searched for the same kind of detailed walks with maps in the Mallorca travel books, but couldn't really find any that satisfied our needs.
That until I found the "Mallorca (Landscapes)" travel book written by Valerie Crespi-Green at the local British Council library. It had all we needed. The walks were magnificent and being nature lovers we enjoyed the details on flower and plant species that we could encounter in our walks. Even though we travelled in September and most flowers blossomed in spring, we still had a lot of species that we could identify thanks to the book. We were especially impressed by the level of detail that these walks had, and were mesmerized by the beauty of the picturesque Deia, even if we had 2 flat tires and almost fell off the cliff in a serpentine with our rented Peugeot 106. We always relied on GPS, whether it was the car tours or the walks and we managed to get around all the obstacles and the inadvertencies between the book and the real situation there (which are absolutely normal, considering nature and paths change constantly). For example, in the Santa Eugenia - Ses Coves walk, we were scared as hell by the barking of guard dogs from a house on a trail described in the book as being free. However, when we returned we actually checked the site of the Sunflower publishing company and found updates to each walks, which included, to my own surprise the episode that we had with the dogs.
We kind of felt sorry at the end of the day that we only borrowed the book, because it would have been worth all the pennies. Highly recommend this book because it doesn't just present the commercial side of the island, but goes and explores its rough side, which shows you the real beauty of the landscapes and people inhabiting them."
