We decided to have a week's break in Mallorca at short notice and as I like to tour around new places and get a feel for their real nature, I wanted a guide that would help me make the best of a short stay. This one seemed to cover the area adequately and was matched with a similarly inexpensive road map, also from the AA.
The background history of the island was given in enough detail to let you understand why things were they way they were, without needing an evening's study. The various regions were clearly defined and useful "Day Tours" set out for each region. I'd never have found the wonderful Wednesday market in Sineu without it, or spectacular drives in the North-West mountain range.
If I'd been going somewhere larger/ for longer, I'd have wanted more depth and detail, but for a week in Mallorca it was pitched just right.

A very informative and concise book. All you need to know for a holiday in Majorca. Clear text and lots of nice photos. Book won't take up to much room in my suitcase. What more could you possibly want for a destination guide book?

Used the guide as our main 'guidebook' for our holiday in early October 2011,using Alcudia as our main base but touring by car daily to all parts of Mallorca except the far west. Did several of the excursions, drives and visits mentioned in the guide, including Capdepera, well worth a visit with fantastic views towards Cala Rajada. Do visit the Tramuntana mountains which we visited by car (twice), and as mentioned in guidebook are very beautiful and would be even better on foot.
The recommended drive around the Central Plain however without stopping but driving comfortably within speed limit took over 3hrs from starting point, not the 2hrs stated in guide. Guidebook recommends 'Soller' but resort & town have very little going for them & are not worth the visit especially as when leaving there is a toll road/tunnel which unless you speak fairly fluent Spanish (I manage a little )you will not realise until too late. The toll (4euros 55cents)is not mentioned in Guide. If driving in Mallorca be vigilant as locals drive rather impatiently and sometimes erratically as evident by many local cars having dent marks. Signposting can also be misleading and rather 'hit & miss' - ALL ROADS LEAD TO PALMA !! (even if heading in opposite direction ).
However a very enjoyable holiday of which we made good use of the guidebook where possible and heeded its advise as to expense etc when visiting attractions and restaurants. An interesting read but not as 'essential' as in the title.
