Huon Mallalieu was born in Dublin and 1946, and brought up in England and Ireland. An historian by training, he catalogued English drawings for Christie's before becoming a full-time writer on art and antiques. His 'Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists', first published by the Antique Collectors' Club in 1976, and now in a 3rd edition, has become the standard reference work. Among much other journalism he has written for The Times since 1976, and he has been the Art Market correspondent for Country Life since 1990. In 2006 (and a moment of madness) he undertook the Saxon army's 1066 12-day march from York to Battle, and survived to write the tale.
