This in a re-release of a Marco Polo CD from 1993 for a much lower price than then. It's a treat! And because it can be had so cheap, do give it a try. You won't find a similar composer like Malipiero anywhere else, perhaps Darius Milhaud is the most nearest one. Malipiero's music is airy. He composed his Seven Inventions and Four Inventions as a score for the 1932 Italian film Acciaio (Steel). The music's function as an accompaniment to a film perhaps explains its consistent use of a basic melodic idea. Malipiero creates interesting and beautiful musical moments from this raw material (Some Respighi to be heard especially in the dramatic opening and concluding movements). Malipiero's 1925 opera Il finto Arlecchino evoked the world of 18th-century Venice, and the music ranges from neo-classical to near parody of the period. Malipiero's Vivaldiana (1952) is a loving tribute that is true to the text of Vivaldi's concerto movements while imbuing them with newly vivid and vibrant orchestral colours. Malipiero composed many of this kind of suites, like Gabrieliana and Cimarosiana. Recording and orchestral playing are top notch. The booklet notes are taken right from the MP release from 1993 so it doesn't mention that conductor Peter Maag died in 2001 which is, I think, not very polite.
