For a first novel, this was outstanding, although if I was an employee of the Australian Tourist Board I would not be pleased with all of the book! The emphasis placed on security and the underlying apprehensions of the heroine make Australian society more threatening than I had previously imagined. The main character is very three dimensional and refreshingly "normal". The forensic detail is skillfully interwoven into the plot and there was real originality in the nature of the central crimes. The build up of the storyline is fairly slow, but I actually didn't mind that, and the pace increases nicely towards the end. The stye made for very easy reading. Comparisons will inevitably be made with Patricia Cornwall and Kathy Reichs - being honest, and making a strictly personal appraisal, I feel there is a freshness here that is somethimes missing these days in the writings of Ms Cornwall and I prefer this author's style to that of Ms. Reichs. If this turns into a series, I will definitely be buying the next one.
