Book Description

30 April 2003 Taschen Basic Art
The supremacy of pure feeling Dabbling in fauvism and cubism before founding the Suprematist movement, Russian painter and sculptor Kasimir Malevich (1879-1935) was a leading figure of the avant-garde and a pioneer of the non-objective style that he felt would ""free viewers from the material world."" In 1915, the same year he produced his most famous painting, ""Black Square,"" he published the manifesto "From Cubism to Suprematism." To critics who accused his work of being devoid of beauty and nature, he responded ""art does not need us, and it never did."" His 1918 painting ""Suprematist Composition: White on White,"" one of the most radical artworks of its time, fetched $60 million at auction in 2008. The supremacy of pure feelingAbout the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art Series features:
a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions

Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) has long been one of my favourite artists + seminal influences on my own work. this Taschen basic art series softback book is a perfectly good introduction to one of the most important artists of the 20th Century. the book measures 8 x 9" features many good quality (if not oustanding) colour reproductions+ fascinating historical photos of the man himself + other key figures of the Russian avant-garde such as Rodchenko,El Lissitsky,Mayaskovsky et al. this taschen book covers KM's life from his post-impressionist derivative work to cubo-futurism to suprematism to later folk inspired figurative works in a concise fairly detailed manner.

so why do you need an albeit budget priced book on Malevich ? principally becuase of his Suprematist + monochrome paintings c.1913-19 where he in parallel with Kandinsky largely invented abstract art, with the daring use of diagonal abstract geometric shapes, forms +compositions. in this google era - any lover of art can just search for his work online + instantly see what i mean. start perhaps with his "black square" work before moving on the suprematist phase. stunning + far far ahead of his time, influencing a whole later generation of monochrome colour artists such as Yves Klein, Ad Reinhardt, Donald Judd,Ben Nicholson and beyond.

recommended for any lover of modern art wanting to investigate the progression of abstract Russian art + its pervasive influence to the present day. not a definitive book (+ the cover artwork from his late phase will not help sell his work to non fans i feel - Taschen really should have used one of his oustanding Suprematist works for the cover but hey..) not a definitive account for the Malevich or Russian avante-garde faithful but good all the same, particularly at the price.
