Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

US teen sitcom Malcolm in the Middle dispenses with canned laughter to foreground the soundtrack in the hands of John Flansburgh and John Lindell, aka indie radio rock darlings They Might Be Giants. In their imaginative care, all kinds of music plays in the show, though don't expect any of their instrumental score here. Surprisingly they only contribute two tracks, the bouncy main title song "Boss of Me", a noisier younger brother of The Rembrandts' theme from Friends, and "Older", which recaptures the eccentricity that probably won them the gig in the first place. Barenaked Ladies continue a similar groove while the Push Stars blend guitar rock with rap and jazz, leading to the full-on pop rap of "Citizen King". In a set that demonstrates how genre barriers are crumbling in the 21st-century postmodern pop melting pot, only the inclusion of "Smile" by Hanson seems an obvious sop to the mainstream chart. The 17 tracks wrap with "I Just Don't Care" by The Dust Brothers, featuring some tantalising samples from the Fox film archive--clue, they penned the Fight Club soundtrack. Sharp, upbeat and sometimes witty: after a decade of dance, electric guitars make a welcome return to a million teenage bedrooms. --Gary S Dalkin

I have wanted to get the "They Might Be Giants" song "Boss of Me" since I first heard it on Malcolm in the Middle. So I was delighted when I found out that there was a soundtrack for the show.

As other people have said this is a large mixture of music genres including a rather original song "I just don't care" which is parts of the shows script put to music - which is suprisingly good!

Some of my favourites on this album are "Boss of Me", "Washin' + Wonderin'" , "Smile" and "Good Life"

If you are a fan of the Malcolm in the Middle theme tune and want to get a decent legal version then this is the best version to buy!

Just in case you are wondering here are the episodes that some of the songs are played in

Right Place, Wrong Time - Home Alone 4 (Season 1)
Drunk is Better than Dead - Lois vs. Evil (Season 1)
Don't Push It, Don't Force It - Cheerleader (Season 1)
Tune In (Round Window)- Halloween Approximately (Season 2)
Cotton Eye Joe - Dinner Out (Season 2)
Good Life - Casion (Season 2)
Washin' & Wonderin' - Therapy (Season 2)
Smile - Old Mrs. Old (Season 2)
We are Monkeys - New Neighbours (Season 2)
You All Dat - The Grandparents (Season 2)
Been Here Once Before - Flashback (Season 2)

Mysteriously none of the other songs on this album actually appear in an episode of Malcolm in the Middle - which really defeats the point of the soundtrack! - But it does not spoil the soundtrack all the songs are great anyway!

I recommend you buy this if you like the songs generally played in Malcolm in the Middle as I do!

Wow! 29 Aug 2001

This album is varied, there is something for everyone. From the catchy, skatey sounds of 'OPM' to the melodic sounds of 'Hanson', then to the amazing bouncyness of 'They Might Be Giants', this album will attract a wide audience. If you are into pop, rock, rap, garage or R'n'B you will love this.

God, Hanson Have Changed! 4 Mar 2001

I have to say that I was very impressed with Hanson's song Smile. I bought this CD as a Non-Hanson fan, and was very surprised after hearing this track. I expected it to be like the annoying MmmBop, but it was nothing like it. Since they returned all I've heard is "They've changed!" and I thought they were losing their mind. I'm 32 years of age, and I'm actually starting to become a Hanson fan. Buy this NOW, to hear Smile by HANSON!

Smile by HANSON actually sounds like Bon Jovi and AeroSmith.

Is That Hanson? 9 Mar 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Hmm.....Is that Hanson singing Smile? It does'nt sound like them, and it's very, very good!

As a former Hanson-Hater, I suppose I have to accept that they've changed.........

Hurrah! 20 Aug 2002
By M Jacobs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I owe everything to MitM. It introduced me to They Might Be Giants! I hafta say, this CD is great for ANYONE who likes rock music and ANYONE who likes the show. The tunes really capture the essence of what Malcolm In The Middle is all about: being a kid and loving it! I'm not really keen on 'We Are Monkeys' despite previously being a pretty casual fan of Travis and I think that perhaps 'I've Seen Better Days' by Citizen King would have been a really good song to put on, plus it was used in the pilot episode.

All in all, most of the songs are brilliant (Boss Of Me, Washin' + Wonderin', Bizarro) but some do get a bit tiresome after a while. It is a great CD and I definitely would recommend it, but you certainly have to be into rock to enjoy it.
