Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Lake Malawi cichlids have become the most popular and well-known group of freshwater aquarium fish. The reason for this is simple: they are colourful ornamental fish that are easy to care for and they display many interesting patterns of behaviour. Aquarists soon become enthusiastic about these magnificent fish and the number of people keeping them is steadily growing. It comes as no surprise that these fish, which are highly developed on the evolutionary scale, are among the most popular in the aquarium hobby.

Lake Malawi cichlids are one of the most popular and best know freshwater aquarium fish in the world. The reason for this is not hard to find, for they are among the most colourful of ornamental fish as well as being easy to keep and breed and highly interesting in behavioural terms. Any aquarist is likely to be captivated by them, and their fans are continually growing in number, making this highly evolved fish a particular favourite with lovers of the aquatc hobby.
Their Lake Malawi home is one of Africa's Great Rift lakes, thought the term "lake" is perhaps something of an understatement for what is in reality an inland sea. A comparison with Lake Windemere helps to give an idea of its vast size: at 600 km (370 miles) in length it is about thirty-four times as long, and its depth is also impressive in places reaching no less than 700 metres (2300 ft). Lake Malawi is home to many cichlids, a significant proportion of them no doubt yet to be discovered, meaning that aquarists can look forward to finding new Lake Malawi cichlids regularly on sale in aquatic centres and pet shops.
Lake Malawi, then, is more an inland sea than a lake and the weather that the lake experiences is correspondingly changeable, sometimes involving violent squalls and waves several metres high. A lake of this size is naturally traversed by ships, and is also a source of food and income to the coastal population. Lake Malawi is one of the purest bodies of freshwater in the world, and it has a multitude of rocky areas where the so-called rock cichlids live. However, the cichlids have also proliferated in the extensive sandy regions, adapting their lifestyles to the local habitat. Of greatest interest for cichlid fans, though, are the rocky areas of Lake Malawi, where the fish chiefly inhabit the shallow waters to a depth of eight to ten metres (26-33). These rocky areas are densely populated, with many different species living cheek by jowl, and consequently it is possible to keep several different species of Lake Malawi cichlids in the same aquarium. However, Lake Malawi cichlids are energetic and on the large side for aquarium fish, and they need a correspondingly large aquarium.

Mostly excellent 10 Dec 2008
This is an excellent book for those seeking to begin with these wonderful fish. It had everything I wanted to get started except it wasn't that good at telling me which species got on with each other apart from some generalisations which I was already aware of e.g. Mbuna don't mix with haps most of the time etc. I still recommend it though.
