First Sentence
ONCE the Malavoglia were as numerous as the stones on the old road to Trezza; there were some even at Ognino and at Aci Castello, and good and brave seafaring folk, quite the opposite of what they might appear to be from their nickname of the Ill-wills, as is but right. Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars Verga's 'verismo', 30 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Verga, inspired by the French realist writers Flaubert and Zola and the Sicilian Capuana, produces his own verist masterpiece. 'The House by the Medlar Tree' depicts a Sicilian fishing village and allows the reader to observe how a people, still untouched by modernisation and industrialisation, copes with the hardships of life. Verga makes no judgements on his characters but leaves the reader to form his own opinions. A pessimistic and moving tale, this novel is certainly not forgotten easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ever Read Thomas Hardy?, 25 Nov 2008
By Vittorio Caffè (Rome, Italy) - See all my reviews
I ask that question because, though no writer worth reading and discussing is exactly like any other writer etc. Hardy, which may be more familiar to English-language readers, is quite similar to Verga. Both realistic writers, both tremendously pessimistic, both believing in fate, both interested in the lower (often lowest) classes, both able to wax lyrical about nature and landscape. The big difference, though, is the setting: Hardy's Wessex is completely different from Verga's Sicily, though the tragedies they stage have so many things in common...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Italian work of art., 21 Oct 2008
By C. Sturgess "Worldlitexpert" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The previous reviewer has seriously undervalued this masterpiece of Italian literature. It is a five star book and essential reading for anyone interested in Italy and its culture. D H Lawrence, no less, understood Verga's genius and translated some of his work. Buy it, and be enthralled.
