Harking back to their Pinkerton days, the self-produced 4th album is indeed, as promised, a lot more rock than Green was. Although the inclusion of Island in the Sun as a bonus track does seem to link it back to the last album, Island was always a stand out track on Green, and mixes well with the slower, more emo-like tracks on the album (Death & Destruction, Burndt Jamb). The album has a full range of styles, unlike all the previous albums; from the aforementioned emo, to the darker, heavier Take Control and Slob (a summer 2k song) through to the upbeat but still rockin' Dope Nose, Fall Together etc, which makes up the majority of the album.
The playing styles on the new album are vastly different as well. Pat's druming is supreme, Rivers and Brian seem much less controlled and much more expressive. And Scott isn't Matt, isn't Mikey; he's all new and all class - the level of rock he brings into =W= is immeasurable.
If the album has one failing, it's the sheer level of cheesy vocal support - the "woah woah"s and "ooh-ooh"s get TOO much at times, but having said that they're steadily growing on me.
But, only Weezer fans tend to buy Weezer records (good job there's plenty of 'em :) ), and no Weez fan should be missing this.
