Grammy Award-winning and 10-million-plus selling singer, actress and entrepreneur Monica, returns to the music scene with her very personal J Records/RCA Music Group aptly titled offering, Still Standing. To define oneself as “still standing” is a bold statement, and as her album title actualizes, “whatever happens to me is just a part of my story. It doesn’t define ... If you know and love this wonderful little album already
then walk on by without a second look.
If you don't then I hope you may linger for a moment or
two to share my enthusiasm.
Three years later than might have happened, had I been more
attentive to the world around me, 'The Makings Of Me' fell into
my clumsy paws as one of those random purchases which sometimes
brings joy and at other times bewilderment or worse.
Despite the presence of writers and producers almost too many
to mention the ten songs in Ms Arnold's project somehow survive
with remarkable coherence.

On the whole it's a mellow and melodious affair.

Opening track 'Everytime The Beat Drop' is about about as
rough-edged as things get. Rough in a good way. The track's
urban beats, although uncharacteristic of the rest of the album,
are not without credibility.
Mr Mayfield's pretty sampled intro to 'Dozen Roses' sets the
mood for a fine half-sung / half-spoken performance.
A worthy meeting of souls across decades.
'Sideline Ho', with it pared down, D'Angeloesque, arrangement
flows along like molten chocolate. Bittersweet and beautiful.
'Why Her' is a well-constructed soul song. Ms Arnold's voice
(and the accompanying harmonies) is a wonderfully expressive
Warm, flexible and easily the equal of the estimable Ms Stone.
'Hell No (Leave Home)' is another cracker ! The fluid vocal
decorations are sharply captured by the spare but effective
economy of the arrangement.
Ms Elliott's presence on 'Doin' Me Right' does the song no great harm.
"Raw' lays down a macho big beat which our heroine navigates
with sassy conviction.

Through all the turmoil and all the struggles Monica proves in this album that despite the downfalls she is a fighter, achiever, and believer. There are no fillers or annoying interludes. My favorite songs are "A Dozen Roses" for the romance, "Why Her?" for the lyrics, "Raw" for the dance style beats, "Getaway" since I can relate to the words and "Hell No" for the rap and strength of character displayed.

This Japan Edition has the bonus track titled, "Thanks For The Misery", a glossy finish lyrical booklet plus obi-strip. The song is a celebration to the single person who has been liberated from the person who wasn't it. "There's no more you and me... who was the one that made you roll the dice twice?... who in the h*ll is the man who I thought was you?... thanks, now everything you didn't give someone else is giving me." Guys, are you listening/reading? Yes, us women can pick ourselves up after you jerk us around. GOTTA MOVE ON has some nice rap along mellow styles bringing to the light that staying solo is better than being with someone that's not all that.

There are beautiful songs that are romantic like A DOZEN ROSES (YOU REMIND ME) showing how different things [Gucci, Bentley) remind her of her lover. Another romantic one would be DOIN' ME RIGHT as their are references to love and feeling it strong. MY EVERYTHING reflects the ultimate dream of finding the perfect lover.

There are slower R&B jams like GETAWAY that show the struggles of dealing with everyday life and wanting to get away. She sings stuff like, "I really don't want to sound like I can't hold my ground but everybody needs some time that they can get away... I'm not superwoman..." WHY HER? is another slow jam that touches on issues of how a love that you wanted did not go as expected.

This a 5* star album!!!!.. its real good with outstanding catchy beats. I aint really on her new look with the blonde but put that to a side as this album deserves a clap!! (clap! clap! clap!) as she also worked with big names like 'missy elliot, swizz beats, twista & more...' My favourite tracks on the album are: 'Everytime the beat drop' - 'Raw' - 'My everything' - 'Gotta move on' - 'Get away'... that is litrually half the album as there are only 10 songs... but top quality 10 songs!...

final words!!!... smoooth & a classical monica album!!!... ENJOY!!! :)
