Book Description

30 Jan 2006

A new romantic and funny novel from the Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author

Lottie Carlyle isn't looking for love when she meets her new boss, Tyler Klein. Living in a beautiful cottage with her two adorable - sometimes - kids in an idyllic village in the heart of the Cotswolds, on good terms with her charming but hopeless ex-husband and with friends all around, she's happy enough with her lot. But Tyler's perfect for Lottie and quickly she falls for him - and he for her. Unfortunately, there's a problem. For reasons that are totally unfair, Lottie's children HATE Tyler. When a rival for Lottie's affections comes on the scene in the shape of charmer Seb, the children adore him, and he's certainly a distraction. But he's not Tyler - and he's not even at all what he seems. Lottie's got a problem - but thanks, in classic Jill Mansell style, to a tobogganing accident and a delicious series of mix-ups, all will be revealed and true love will find a way.

More About the Author

Jill Mansell lives with her partner and children in Bristol, and writes full time.
Actually that's not true; she watches TV, eats fruit gums, admires the rugby players training in the sports field behind her house, and spends hours on the internet Tweeting and marvelling at how many other writers have blogs. Only when she's completely run out of displacement activities does she actually write.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT-AGAIN! 20 Aug 2006
Once again i'm not dissapointed by Jill Mansell's new novel and she definately meets all my expectations and more. Her stories are perfect for any occasion: bus, train, work, holiday or just those lazy sunday afternoons.

If you've never read any of her books i recommend you purchase all of them as she never dissapoints and they are a thrill to read over and over again!

I just wish i didn't have to wait so long for another of her books to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD BOOK TO COSY UP WITH! 31 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Any story which eventually covers Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas gets my vote! This was a very enjoyable read, and the first Jill Mansell book I have read. I am currently enjoying 'Kiss', and intend to read all of Jill's many novels. Highly recommended as a book that has everything, including a sense of humour that keeps popping up unexpectedly and has you laughing out loud. A good cross-section of characters makes for many varied storylines that intermingle beautifully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too much going on. 8 Feb 2006
By Fran
This is not a bad book, in fact when I'd finally managed to get to grips with who was who I enjoyed it quite a lot, my only gripe is that Jill Mansell seems to be trying to put too much into her stories lately and I never felt enough empathy with any of the numerous characters to care too much really.
Her last book was a dismal effort - in my humble opinion - and while this is drastically better I still have a problem with the complexity that isn't needed. I much prefer her simpler, earlier work in that respect.
Lottie is a likable character that I never felt I had a chance to get to know too well, and why did she and Cress only seem to share a chapter or so? Considering they're supposed to be best friends they didn't spend much time together.
Tyler seems nice enough, but then so do Mario and Seb. Too many men to choose from? Maybe.
And finally, the ending had me feeling a little cheated and I'd experienced such better feelings of romance earlier on in the book that I felt the last scene was lacking in any.
Overall a feel-good Jill Mansell romance with plenty of village life thrown in, enjoyable for an afternoon's reading but don't get your hopes up too high on this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 9 Feb 2006

I have read all of Jill Mansell's books and this one doesn't disappoint. Some parts you laugh out loud and others have you wipe a tear away. It is definetly an "easy, feel good" book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best 27 May 2012
This book was sort of a let down for me. It started out with so much potential, and had all the elements that Jill Mansell is known for. I liked Lottie's spirit, I loved Tyler's character and all the secondary characters were great - to start with.

Then the plot got thicker, and the characters became almost comical.

The storyline was ridiculous to tell you the truth, what with Lottie not choosing to be with a perfectly decent guy because her children disliked him. I am all with a mother putting her children first, but I mean, for crying out loud, the poor sod did nothing wrong. The children were spoiled brats, and that whole scene with them actually telling on their own mother to their principal and having her tell off Lottie and threaten her even was absolutely horrid. And Sebastian, seriously? I saw that end coming from the moment she first met him.

Also, Mario's storyline was very silly, unnecessary and not believable. Oh, but wait, here comes the good part...Cressida and her little romantic adventure. Good old Cressida. Cressida whose husband leaves her because she couldn't bear him any children, but then runs off, gets married, has a kid and asks his ex-wife to basically raise his kid. Oh, but the story's not over yet, because you see, Cressida gets SO attached to the little girl that she thinks of her as her own, and with a stroke of luck, her parents turn out to be insensitive, uncaring parents, who pretty much couldn't care less what happened to their daughter. So when they decide they are moving countries for a good business venture, they think well, we'll just leave our daughter - Jojo - with Cressida and have her adopt her because we are such incompetent, selfish parents. And Cressida gets EVERYTHING she wants in the world. A love story, AND a daughter.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit dissapointing 4 Sep 2007
I am 120 pages into this novel and, to be honest, am finding it a bit boring. So far we have been introduced to the characters, and the scene has been set, but nothing of any significance has actually happened. I find myself skim-reading the pages and wondering where it is actually going. Shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars Make your own mind up! 7 Feb 2006
excellent read! The story is focused on lottie and her pursuit in finding a boyfreind who her kids approve of. Not only that, it highlights the relationship between different generations when Lottie discovers her boss, who also is a close friend, has a terminal illness. This book is a feel good read. I must mention however that i feel the getting together of Lottie and her `accepted` boyfriend is left a little to late on in the book. I was left wondering `what happens next` by the last page.
