Sal Moreno runs his family's restaurant , he is interviewing for a head cook. Grace is twenty one but has fibbed on her application and put twenty three. Even so Sal has no intention of giving her the job as she is still at culinary school. But he does say he might be interested in offering her a bartenders job which she does have accreditation for. Disappointed Grace leaves. Grace grew up helping her grandmother in her restaurant and feels more than capable of a cooks job but no one will give her a chance. She lives with her mother, stepfather and younger sister Rose. Grace looks out for Rose and as soon as she can get a good job she intends to move herself and Rose out of the family home, away from her drunken stepfather and her mother who cares about no one but herself. After three days Grace returns to the Moreno Restaurant to ask about the bartenders job as her circumstances have altered and she needs the money. Sal is not there but his brother Alex is and he tells her she should not have lied on her form, but being soft hearted gives her the job. Sal is furious.
This is a better read than "Always Been Mine" IMO. I thought the story had more depth and had a lot more emotion. Sal has never been a one man woman, he doesn't do long term. He is all about making his family's business a success. But the more time he spends around Grace the more he wants her. For her part after their bad start she has come to like and respect Sal, yes he's very handsome but she has seen the woman he dates. He would not be interested in her. But it doesn't stop her hoping.
I very much like this authors characters, they are multi-layered, the storyline is quite good as well. A nice well written romance.
