Review

"Goldstone's investigation of the social and political impacts of tourism is original and fascinating." Dennis Judd, coauthor of The Tourist City (ISBN 0 300 07846 3 pb., ?12.95)"

Product Description

Over the past hundred years, tourism has evolved into the world's biggest business, and few countries today question the common wisdom that the road to economic development is paved with tourist dollars. Yet questions should be raised, Patricia Goldstone argues in this path-breaking book on the social and political impacts of tourism. She examines for the first time the close connections between business and politics as government and industry leaders work together to reengineer political trouble spots into tourist destinations in places like Ireland, Turkey, and Cuba. She also probes the impact of tourism on diverse cultures. In a keenly perceptive account of the history of tourism in the twentieth century, the book tells how and why tourism aligned itself with political power, how it became embedded within such nontourist institutions as the World Bank, and how since World War II it has become an instrument of international development policy. In detailed case studies that are also compelling travel narratives, Goldstone documents the effects of tourism on local people, includings its tendency to lead governments toward greater social repression. She offers fascinating insights into the ironies of modern tourism - how, for example, it can insulate tourists from the very things they seek to encounter, and how, despite its preservational efforts, tourism can affect a culture in complex, sometimes troubling, ways.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much and too little, 21 Oct 2002
By R. L. Huff "An old reader" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Making the World Safe for Tourism (Hardcover)
Goldstone's book has many good moments and points, and is at its best when describing what she has personally experienced while on the road. When she goes "off-road," however, problems begin: undocumented - most likely fake quotes - attributed to Fidel Castro, nonsensical statistics like a 7:1 ratio of men to women in Cuba (!) and a tendency to overcram the narrative with irrelevant diversions. The story of the Ludlow, Colorado, massacre is gripping in itself, but not necessary to tell a story of tourism in the modern world. In all, the book reads like a college undergrad term paper with miles of padding. Still it has its merits and does the basic job it set out to do, to trace the connection between international finance and tourist hot spots.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor research, shoddily written, 3 Aug 2007

Not sure how this book ever came into print. Scholarship is on par with high school level, and the writing less than interesting. Her grasp of the world is such that I suspect Goldstone has seen the world mostly through the lobbies of great hotels.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big picture? Little picture? What's this book about?, 2 Jan 2007
By W. Tuohy - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Making the World Safe for Tourism (Hardcover)
This book is quirky (a word?), and almost "trash" (a word I do know). Despite sometimes interesting facts (or are they "facts?" I am not sure I can trust her, and she gives no sources). The author demonstrates no modesty in her presumed range of expertise applied to an immense range of topics and events.

I agree with most of what was said by the other two Amazon reviewers, and cannot recommend this book - except perhaps to conspiracy lovers who don't require thorough, well organized presentations.
