4.0 out of 5 stars Classic stuff, 4 Oct 2009

This review is from: Making Woodwork Aids and Devices (Paperback)
This book is full of workshop lore, good ideas and inspiration for other ideas. There is a considerable overlap with 'The Resourceful Woodworker' and if you have the latter you may not find this volume quite so useful - nevertheless there is some material in it which provides food for thought.

If you like hand woodworking and make your own tools and jigs then your library would probably be incomplete without this book.

If you use machinery much then be aware that some of the jigs would I suspect fall very short of the UK HSE PUWR regulations introduced since the book was written (of course if you are a one man band or hobbyist much of the Regs will not apply - but obviously the rules are there for a purpose and ignored at your peril). Use of saw tunnel guards (described in the book) might make some of the circular saw jigs compliant but will require some extra thought to adapt them to the schemes illustrated in the text.

The style is friendly, no nonsense, and gets to the point and is obviously written by someone who has a wealth of experience and enjoys his subject. Illustrations and photos are not the glossy fare of some of the more modern publications but none the worse for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 5 Sep 2011
This review is from: Making Woodwork Aids and Devices (Paperback)
I wish I'd read this a few years ago - would've saved me a lot of bother! Full of ingenious ideas from the very simple (how to save your fingers when screwing in lots of hooks) to quite complicated ones (constructing a range of wooden planes etc) Written in a very direct and practical style - definitely not a coffee table book - this is extremely generous with the ideas and experience of the author - I think I'll still be using this in twenty years time!
