Product Description

Product Description

A collection of projects for making wooden toys. All the projects should be well within the scope of most amateur woodworkers and require only basic equipment and readily-available materials. There are 20 projects altogether, ranging from a simple car through to a sewing machine with moving interior parts. There are toys to entertain children with a range of interests from a grader to planes, a helicopter, a train and even a pram. Complete plans, measurements and exploded views support the reader through each project and there are simple, step-by-step instructions.

The toys offered in this book will satify the age group from approximately 3 years to 10 years. They range from the fairly simple to the more demanding. The offerings fall into the category of toys rather than models. The simpler toys would allow the childs imagination to make good any shortfall in detail, while those that are a little more complicated could be considered to be nearer to models.

I think the photographs and the 'exploded' diagrams are particularly useful to the constructor. The photographs seem to make the point that the toys can be made from wood scraps. When I constructed both the Tipper Truck and the Four Wheeled Drive Car I replaced the plywood with appropriately thin pine which gave the finished toy a more 'polished' look.

I was impressed with the idea of using 'eyes' for fixing the axles to the toy body. It overcame the sometimes difficult job of aligning the axles parallel to eachother, and at right angles to the main body.

The author suggests photocopying the scale drawing to full size and then using them as templates. This is not necessary as scaling can be achieved from the drawings. Perhaps a few more dimensions would prove helpful.

Considering the book as a whole, I think it deserves a place on the 'wooden toy making' bookshelf.
