The new Studio platform is no exception to this happy rule. Although a tiny bit expensive at the recommended retail price (compared to its direct competitors in, say, the eJay stable) the powerful punch packed herein will soon make you forget any extra cost. Just take the basic interface, if you need convincing. Such is the logic of MW's software writing, Studio's central console has a striking clarity and rigour despite its relative sophistication. Simply by using your mouse you can niftily switch between the 5,000 (very) high quality samples and the six-octave audio and midi note arranger, whereon you will already have laid one of your 2/4/8/16 band tunes, all linked to your favourite presynched 32 beat per bar drum soundtrack. After that it's another cinch to mix in your synth, bassline synth, lead synth, virtual synth, french horn and, God knows, didgeridoo. And from there it's a short leap to genuine musical experimentation, with the phaser, vinyliser (particularly good), filter delay, effect envelope automation, realtime wave editor and groove extractor, all coming into play.
What's great about the Making Waves software is that the interfaces are so simple yet effective. The MIDI really rocks, the live performance facility is a total ruby, and there are endless possibilities of user configurable GUI to explore. --Sean Thomas
