Because of its impressive price-to-performance ratio, the Making Waves family of home studio software kits is, well, making waves in the world of DIY computer music. The latest version, Making Waves Audio Pro, will only add to the excited furore.
Why? Get a load of these features: multi-sample editor, real time/step recording facility, 1000 track midi/audio effects sequencer, auto time stretch and pitch correction, plus Direct X plug-in support and so on. There are also (boffins take note) low filters, song markers and zoom facilities, floating point audio playbacks, multi-bit file exports, 3,000 bundled top quality sample sets and loops. And there's a cool on-screen keypad, dinky little tempo controls and an especially relishable "effect envelope automation". But how will they work on your PC? The answer is: pretty well. The Music Maker people have designed the sweetest of user interfaces, only occasionally will you need to resort to the manual. Commonly, it's a simple case of dragging and dropping your riff or sample into your track, then utilising the flange, compressor or reverb, or having some fun with attack or sustain, or of course getting bored with the on-disk noises and importing some different sounds of your own discovery (though be warned, the Direct X plug-in is a little bit suspect and has been known to crash).
Such is the quality of the Making Waves Audio Pro, Daniel Bedingfield was able to record his number 1 song "Gotta Get Thru This" on a previous version. So if you're looking to outdo a famous DJ, and in the process pin down some kit that is largely superior to most of its obvious rivals in the relevant market (such as eJay's Director Pro--fine as that is) you'd be hard pushed to find better than Making Waves Audio Pro. --Sean Thomas
