Recently I've read lots of books that have been jam packed with pertinent information, ideas and knowledge. This book bucks that trend and was a real let down.

There are two key problems with the book:

First, it's way too long - the whole book could have been condensed in to about 1/4 the pages and I got the feeling that someone was told they had to fill about 50 pages before writing it. The book seems to reiterate several points from different (yet strangely similar) perspectives.

Second, it often has a 'play school' feel to it. Things like writing a 'constitution' for your team - by the time you have to resort to stuff like that you've got far bigger problems on your hands and should probably be considering a change in career!

Overall I can't help think that the authors were just paid to write a series of books on management and this book just happened to be one of the books in that series. The book had maybe one or two items that I found even remotely useful and informative - I certainly would not recommend this book, sorry!

Useful, concise book. Easy to read, pick up and put down. None of us can put too many things in place at once so its good to have a resource to hand in order that people can have ideas to put into action and see results quickly.

Practical advice for REAL Managers 4 Jan 2005
By Paul A. Jarvie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Maginn's ideas and tools really work. I have been able to use his material in my consulting practice, and groups of real managers--from supervisors to division managers--have found the material helpful. I recommend this book highly, and have given it to several line-manager clients facing real teamwork-related problems. All report that the book is both insightful and really useful on the job from day to day. This book delivers a boatload of value for a low price.
