4.0 out of 5 stars dough characters, 19 May 2010
By
This review is from: Making Soft-bodied Dough Characters (Paperback)
As I am new to doughcrafting, I'm looking forward to learning this new craft. This book is very well illustrated, with step by step instructions on how to make these characters. It also has a coloured photos guide showing some techniques. Also the clothes patterns are full-size to trace off. I think that this is a good book for beginners at this craft, like myself! It should be very easy to follow.

When I bought this book, I had never heard of a craft making soft bodied salt dough characters and thought it might be another string to my bow. I was right. I have made at least 12 and when my sister in law saw them, she wanted to make some too. So I looked on Amazon(again) and bought her one as a surprise. She said she was going to try them with air drying clay so they would be more durable. You have to make sure the salt dough you make for the heads is stiff enough before it goes into the oven, otherwise your character ends up with a rather squashed flat head. But like anything else, practise makes perfect(well acceptable at any rate). This is a very well written and illustrated book. You need very few tools and just scraps of material for the clothes. If you are looking for something a bit different, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 12 Oct 2001
By Eileen - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Making Soft-bodied Dough Characters (Paperback)
Patricia Hughes' book, Making Soft Bodied Dough Characters, presents easy to follow instructions for making wonderful little dolls out of salt dough. In no time at all, I made the mother teddy bear and she turned out beautifully! My children were delighted. The step by step directions leave nothing to chance - anyone can create these interesting, colorful characters. I can't wait to get started on the pirate, the fisherman, and the other delightful dolls so beautifully depicted in the photographs. The only materials you need to get started are flour, salt, water and some fabric scraps. The dolls would make lovely gifts for children or adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darling book!, 11 Jun 2006
By L. M. MACLEAN "If too many books were a crime..." - Published on Amazon.com

What a great book--the pictures are clear to show you what you're doing, the book contains both animals and people, and the designs are sweet. I can't wait to start. These figures I thought would be smaller, but all are six inches high. Although the book warns that these are decorations and not toys due to small parts (such as beads for noses and eyes) I would like to try making some dollhouse dolls for an older child.
