Product Description

Review
'Sarah's book is an essential resource for all families who have an adolescent with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, such as Asperger's syndrome. The information is detailed and accurate, and addresses just about all the issues relating to the important subject of sexuality, which is all too often distorted and presented in a biased way. Sarah's approach is to explain the facts neutrally and realistically, while acknowledging individual values and respecting personal choice. I will certainly be recommending this book to all my clients.'- Isabelle Henault PhD. Author of Asperger Syndrome and Sexuality: from Adolescence through Adulthood

Product Description
Puberty is a time of huge change in the physical body, in emotional experience and in social relationships. Having an understanding of these developments and learning how to deal with them is essential, and for people with Asperger's syndrome it can be a challenge to get to grips with the social and emotional aspects of puberty, sex and relationships. This book is ideal for those who need clear, detailed explanations and direct answers to the many questions raised by puberty and sexual maturity. Sarah Attwood describes developments in both the male and female body, and explains how to maintain hygiene and personal care, and to promote general good health. She examines emotional changes, including moods and sexual feelings, and provides comprehensive information on sex, sexual health and reproduction. She looks at the nature of friendship, how it changes from childhood to adulthood and its importance as a basis for sexual encounter. She also offers coping strategies for different social experiences, from bullying to dating, and includes essential tips on the politics of mature behaviour, such as knowing the difference between public and personal topics of conversation." Making Sense of Sex" is a thorough guide written in unambiguous language with helpful diagrams, explanations and practical advice for young people approaching puberty and beyond.

(REAL NAME)
'Making Sense Of Sex - A forthright guide to pubery, sex and relationships for people with Aspergers Syndrome' Sarah Attwood, JKP.

Sarah Attwood has a background as a sexuality educator and has a sister with Aspergers syndrome, so she clearly has the right credentials to write this much needed book. It was incredibly easy to read and free from any sense of awkwardness that a book on sex can have. All aspects of growing up are covered in matter of fact dialogue. I suspect that any young person would soon lose themselves in the content and feel very comfortable with the format and illustrations. This book is actually appropriate for any young person but Attwood's understanding of the very specific needs of people with Aspergers is evident throughout. Because many children with Aspergers may not have the opportunity to mix with their peers and discuss relationships and changes to their bodies, this book helps to fill the gap in the knowledge base and equip them in the language they may need to understand this period of their lives. It gives them an insight into the world of their peers that may otherwise be denied.

The text pays wonderful attention to detail and she often, necessarily for her target group, states the obvious. Attwood is careful not to overlook any potential areas for misunderstandings and she gently guides the young person through all aspects of growing up from the physical, emotional and social changes right through to information on STI and experimenting with drugs.

The book is divided into 11 chapters which covers such areas as:-

sexual and reproductive organs including superb illustrations
Puberty
Caring for your body
Physical Health
Understanding Emotions
Friendships
Sexual Health, Relationships and Reproduction
Sexual Language

Attwood encourages boys and girls to learn about each other. She details the physical changes that a young person going through puberty can expect and mentions little details that a parent may easily overlook. For example, she mentions that the skin on a boys scrotum may become scratchy and darkened and it is easy for a parent to forget the immense angst that we feel as we change and do not know what is normal and what is not normal. single mothers will particularly appreciate the tips on how to cope with a spontaneous erection.

Attwood does not confine herself to sexual issues but includes all aspects of growing up including relationships with parents and the issue of independence. She is extremely understanding and neutral and this enables her to present the parent's view in a way that the teenage reader may be open to.

The chapter on drug use is a little sketchy and best suited to the younger reader or the more innocent older child. However, this is not a criticism as she has covered a lot of ground in considerable detail in ll other areas of the book.

I found the chapter on friendships extremely clear and felt that it really would be of use to a young person wishing to expand their social horizon. This chapter had a lot of material that could be used in role play with a willing helper. She looks at why we have friends, how to make and keep them and explains about hierarchies, peer pressure and bullying in clear and simple terms. For young people wishing to take a friendship to a sexual level she helps them to identify when someone is interested and how to pace things.

Attwood gives a chapter to both sexual health and caring for your body and gives sage advice on STI and personal hygiene. She explains why personal hygiene is important and what needs to be done in terms that are clear to someone with Aspergers.

The final section on sex and sexual relationships discusses sexual feelings, sexual intercourse, heterosexuality, homosexuality, celibacy (it might have been useful to have like a small paragraph on asexuality ) sexual abuse etc and importantly understanding the social constraints regarding appropriate sexual behaviour. This is an area that Attwood covered sensitively and intelligently. I would have liked even more on this area with examples of inappropriate sexual behaviour taken from real cases eg. a 15 year old boy asking a teacher or uninterested peer for sex with explanations of why this is inappropriate and how the child can control their sexual feelings.

The final section on sexual words is an inspired idea and shows that one is never too old to learn a thing or two!

I am extremely comfortable with the content of this book and would feel more than happy for my child to read it. I thoroughly recommend it and feel that children and teenagers will get different things from the book depending on their own individual level of development and personal situation. They can easily revisit the sections that are relevant to their own lives. Sarah Atwood has admirably filled a niche in the market.
