Product Description

Review

"Ideal for final year trainee cardiac physiologists and for echocardiographers studying for their BSE exam.

Dr Houghton is to be congratulated on producing a book that manages to be wide-ranging, detailed, up-to-date, well organised and compact."

(SCST Update, 2009 )

"This book then is likely to provide a handy reference in most, if not all, echocardiography departments. A measure of its success will be if it finds a place in most physiologists' pockets."

(Cardiology News )

"After reading this, I was much clearer in the uses and applications of echocardiography. It is a good overview that was appraochable, but contained enough information for a junior doctor without having to invest in a weighty tome of a reference book."

(BMA Medical Book Awards 2010 )

'This is a great quick reference, easy to carry, printed on high quality paper with colorful tables and illustrations that every echo enthusiast should possess'

(Doody's Core Titles )

Product Description

Echocardiography is a powerful diagnostic tool that allows assessment of cardiac function, detection of cardiovascular abnormalities, and measurement of physiological parameters such as valvular function and left ventricular ejection fraction. Taking a step-by-step approach to transthoracic echocardiography, Making Sense of Echocardiography is the ideal handbook for anyone preparing for the Transthoracic Echocardiography accreditation examination of the British Society of Echocardiography. The handbook's 'how to' approach makes it the ideal reference text for the practicing sonographer.

Making Sense of Echocardiography provides a clinical context for each echo study and includes the latest published guidelines on what to do with the results.  Transthoracic echocardiography is covered throughout with clear step-by-step guidance on how to perform each study, evaluate your findings and write your report. Separate chapters describe the use of transoesophageal and stress echocardiography. Newer modalities such as 3D and tissue Doppler imaging are covered alongside traditional ultrasound methods, providing a complete snapshot of echocardiography and its applications in cardiac medicine today.

As an up-to-date, accessible, and clearly-written overview of echocardiography, this book is unrivalled.  It is an essential guide for Cardiologists, Cardiac Technicians, Primary Care Physicians, specialist nurses, and anyone with an interest in cardiac imaging.

I have just qualified as a clinical physiologist. I wish I had owned this book throughout training!!..(I own "Echo made easy" and although it is good, this book is a world apart from that) It is clear, concise and explains everything throughly without assuming the reader already knows it. The images are are clear, descriptive and what you would expect to see on a echocardiogram. This book goes into much more depth without intimidating the reader and enables you to learn from the basics. For anyone who comes into contact with echo, whether a sonographer or medical professional this book is definately a must.

Textbooks in any discipline are extremely difficult to write, and anybody who takes the time to do so must be congratulated. The amount of work entailed is disproportionate to the time most reviewers and users will take to read it. In addition, no single textbook can meet all the many needs of those who come to a discipline such as echocardiography. Having read this book from cover to cover (which is probably a testament in itself to its readability) I would assess its value as being most suited to cardiac physiologists. It has most of the information that one would require in regard to what the book calls `Essential Principles'. This includes chapters on cardiac anatomy and physiology, physics and instrumentation, Doppler physics, and includes a useful statement on what should be provided in an echocardiographic department (`Service Provision'). This section is directly taken from the guidelines laid down by the British Society of Echocardiography. The second and third sections deal with `Imaging Techniques' and `Clinical Cases'. The book size is just smaller than A5 and could fit in a large pocket. It has a suitably chunky feel at 344 pages. Because it is fairly concise, it is also fairly dogmatic, and this is no bad thing, so long as one remembers that there are always areas of dispute. In other respects, this is an admirable attempt to fill a gap between large scale texts and texts which focus purely on imaging acquisition. The illustrations are always adequate and sometimes very good. In the stress echo section, the illustration of the term quad screen usually refers to the same view with rest and three levels of stress, rather than multiple views at rest, but most of the images illustrate the point made in the text appropriately. This book then is likely to provide a handy quick reference in most, if not all, echocardiography departments. A measure of its success will be if it finds a place in most physiologists' pockets.

Reviewer: Andrew A McLeod, MD, Consultant Cardiologist, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; with thanks to Dr Catherine Blakemore who read the section on stress echocardiography.

So many echo books around and hard to know which one to buy. This one has to feature in your essential reading list. The title is perfect for what this book will do. Excellent for any physician or cardiac physiologist starting out in echocardiography. It's one of those books that you want to read from cover to cover (and I have!). The writing style makes it very readable but every page is packed with information. Good diagrams and illustrations. I'll happily throw away some of the echo books I've bought over the years (many of them much more expensive than this one) and keep this.Making Sense of Echocardiography
