Product Description

Review

I love books that not only offer great patterns, but inspire each individual's creative soul. Some people need encouragement that, yes, they do each have their own creative soul and that is what Making Quilts with Kathy Doughty of Material Obsession does so well. Quilters will learn to push the limits of color and print combination with a flair from "down under." Many of the quilts are a visual cacophony with surprisingly pleasing results. Then there is the strikingly simpler "Wagga" on page 123. A wonderful opportunity to let a few fabrics (perhaps even recycled fabric) humbly harmonize together. --American Quilt Retailer; September 2013

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a patch on Material Obsessions 16 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Kathy Doughty's first 2 books written with Sarah Fielke (Material Obsessions 1 and 2) are on my list of all-time favourite quilt books. So I was looking forward to seeing this solo effort. Whilst it is well written (it's a French publication for Quiltmania translated into English) for me it doesn't pack the same punch as her previous 2 books - mainly due in my opinion to the fabrics chosen for her quilts - some very strange combinations and incongruous styles of patterns used in the same quilt. I preferred the cleaner, clearer colours of her earlier work. So my recommendation is to read the Material Obsession duo and then wait for Kathy's new book, 'Adding Layers' which is due in 2014 and hopefully a return to her brighter style.

5.0 out of 5 stars More funky quilts! 23 July 2013
By M. Grigsby - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I just received my copy of this book last night, and was delighted to find a number of funky designs that I definitely want to make. As an American, I find her Australian color selections to be different than what we typically see in the U.S., but that is precisely one of the things I find so attractive. Although I wasn't personally drawn to some of the color combinations in the book, I really loved many of the designs. The Folk Art Birds were a delightful silhouette, but combined with the wacky border, it was a great quilt. She also had done some very interesting things with a slight diagonal cut across a single block. I have been seeing one of those quilts featured in her wonderful blog, and was quite anxious to get my copy of the book so that I can re-create it. I am a big fan of the "Material Obsession" look, so if you have liked Kathy Doughty's work in the past, you will want to get a copy of this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book 28 July 2013
By Bubble - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you can't take a class or workshop from Kathy, this is the next best thing. Her style is a blend of traditional, modern, funky and insouciant all rolled into one happy package. The directions are clear and each quilt is a learning experience of color and texture. There is piecing and appliqué and template techniques. Time spent with her book will make you see fabric in a new viewpoint. AWESOME!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed! 31 Aug 2013
By Pds - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was anxiously waiting for this book to become available in the U.S. so I purchased it as soon as it was available and affordable. Where a couple os the quilts are great (Fractured is my favorite), the majority are really nothing new. The color values and all the mixed prints make the book not as visually beautiful as the other two she wrote. Am also really disappointed with all the templates rather than using quick cutting techniques or rulers....

I love her quirky color combinations and funky patterns. There is something here for all skill levels including some rather advanced patterns. Well written with very fine pattern instructions.
