Product Description

Making News is a darkly hilarious story about celebrity culture and the contentious phone-hacking lows Fleet Street media uses to produce a tabloid that everyone loves to read.

Tabloids are fun until your dad becomes the story...

Lucas Dekker is celebrity offspring, twice over. His Australian father, Charlie, has recently retired from a stellar football career in the Premier League. His English mother, Monica, is a self-help guru, who has sold millions of books with her pro-family message. But when Charlie's involvement in a bizarre sex scandal hits the tabloids, the Dekkers' own family dynamic will never be the same again.

This is an absolute cracker of a read from a man who has been labelled Australia's answer to Ben Elton. I've been a big Ben Elton fan since Stark (well, since The Young One's and Black Adder ... but talking literature here) and have read just about everything he's written. And I have to say Tony Wilson is just as good.

I couldn't put Making News down, and as the recent News of the World phone hacking scandal has show us, not only is it a great read, it paints a frightening accurate picture of the tabloid newspaper industry.

If you're a Ben Elton fan, make sure you get a copy ... you'll love it.

A great read that I polished off in one sitting. It's a (funny) satire, but I couldn't put it down until I knew how the seemingly over-the-top plot unfolded -- I needed to know what happened to Lukas and the tabloid journalists he'd crossed paths with.

Like many Melburnians I knew Tony Wilson was a TV and radio personality. His book jackets mention being a former footballer and lawyer. I figured his occasional contributions to The Age (what we like to think of as our Guardian) were the product of his own keenly observant mind and his broad network of connections. But in light of the News of The World phone hacking scandal it looks like Wilson probably moonlighted for Murdoch at some point too.

So on behalf of all Australians can I apologise for the work of one Aussie, but -- as some sort of peace offering -- heartily recommend that of another? It's a rollicking read.

A fantastic read 19 July 2011

A very enjoyable book that is now all the more timely given recent hacking events.
It is laugh out loud funny and the characters jump right out of the page.
Definitely recommended.
