This book is a gift. Few directors really explain anything of the process of film making and when they do it is basic and uninteresting. In this book Lumet talks in detail of every stage of the production of a feature film including his personal experiences as well as others. He examines film from an artistic, technical and commercial angle and does so in a wonderfully entertaining and addictive writing style. This book is an absolute must for any film student or prospective film maker.

This book by American film director Sydney Lumet is an entertaining and insightful account on the film making process. In a mixture of wit and information Lumet successfully describes the fascinating role of the film director. Using a number of his own films as examples, he guides the reader through the entire film production process - from the first idea to the premiere. Filled with wonderful quotations and anecdotes this book is a real gem and and essential for film students, cinema lovers and anyone interested in the way movies work.
