Product Description

This text is an introduction to making mosaics as well as providing inspiration for those with some experience. The 15 projects mostly use glass and ceramic tiles or broken china. There is a wide variety of items to make, appealing to all budgets and tastes.

From the Author

My latest book of 15 new step by step mosaic projects
When my first step by step book of mosaics, ‘Mosaics in a Weekend’ came out in 1997, mosaic was undergoing something of a renaissance. The media, magazines and the general public had realised that it was possible to make your own mosaics and that this ‘ancient art’ was also a very much alive contemporary one. As if to prove this point, my second book, ‘Design Sourcebook Mosaics’ containing 200 mosaics by 46 artists became the first ever directory of contemporary mosaic. The public could now commission the artists directly or indeed become inspired enough to make mosaics for themselves. In the meantime, I have for the past five years been holding monthly mosaic courses from our beautiful 18 Th. Century home in Broadstairs. Over this period, more than five hundred people have now attended these courses, many going on to become professional mosaic artists in their own right whilst others have taken up mosaic as a hobby and continued to make beautiful mosaics. (One of the many perks of my job is to receive the latest pictures of these.) I am also proud of the fact that, as a result of the courses, many people have now visited the beautiful seaside town of Broadstairs who might not otherwise have done so. It soon became obvious that there was a growing demand for mosaic kits, so as a natural progression Martin Cheek Mosaic Kits was set up by myself and my friend Alan Welcome. So when I was asked to write another step by step book on mosaics I was more prepared to target the public’s demand for mosaic kits than last time.

About the Projects in this book. The projects in this book have been designed very much with accessibility in mind. There are templates for all the projects and these can be enlarged on a photocopier. MDF blanks are available direct from the suppliers. Adhesives, grout, tools and safety equipment are widely available from DIY outlets. Despite the popularity of mosaic as a pastime it can still prove difficult to obtain mosaic tiles in small quantities, particularly if you need a wide variety of colours. In order to make getting started easier, mosaic tile packs are available from ‘Martin Cheek Mosaic Kits’ for most of the projects in this book and also for those in my first book, ‘Mosaics in a Weekend’. (Also published by New Holland) Details of suppliers can be found at the back of this book I am continually amazed by the range of diverse styles that are possible using, what on the face of it, is such an inflexible material. I was delighted that four other professional mosaicists were willing to contribute to this book as well as my own team of assistants. It was important to show styles other than my own, which try as I might I am unable to do alone - my style is my style and I am stuck with it! In designing the projects, we have tried to show the wide range of styles, materials and techniques available to the modern mosaicist. There are projects for internal and external use, direct and indirect. I doubt if the same people who are drawn to the Crazy Concrete Planter on P.00 are going to want to undergo the painstaking process of mosaicing the Elephant Tea Tray on P.00 or the Angel Firescreen on P.00, it’s ‘horses for courses’ as the saying goes. Whichever projects you decide to tackle, I hope you derive as much fun and satisfaction as we did in putting this book together for you. So happy nibbling! Martin Cheek 14.4.99

After a disappointing afternoon trawling through a variety of dull books on mosaic design, I was thrilled to find this delightful, practical and beautifully-presented manual. Not only are the designs fresh and funky (ranging from simple tulip patterns, to tropical fish, fruits, birds and Indian elephants), there are several templates included and full instructions on how to make each mosaic. The book is divided into 'projects' - such as a mosaic table top, a tea tray, a hot plate and a jewelery box - and each pattern is easily adaptable to other uses. Each of the 15 designs comes from a top mosaic artist, and there's a wide range of styles illustrated. There's also a comprehensive list of equipment suppliers in the UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, useful tips, and information on a mosaic course run by the author in his home town of Broadstairs, Kent (an English seaside town well worth a visit for the wacky mosaics adorning much of the architecture). Personally, I can't wait to get started - on a chipboard table I bought recently in a closing-down sale for £2.50. Thanks to this book, it'll be soon be worth a million dollars!

I have loved this book from the minute I opened it, I have seen many of Martin's mosaic books and he never fails to enthrall me. He has to be my favourite mosaicist. This book is great for all levels of mosaic artist. His projects are easy to follow and he gives inspiration for you to be able to go off and make up your own ideas. A great addition to your mosaic book library
