5.0 out of 5 stars For everyone in the family 6 May 2014
By Love to learn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Wow, this incredible book really makes you think outside of the box, way outside of the box. I love doing the exercises, drawing with my non-dominate hand with my eyes closed and then using my colored pencils to make a picture. You never know what will come out of the creative process and it amazes me that it gives me an answer to my question. I will refer to this process from now on. It's exciting and it all comes from within me, I like that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Insight! 2 Jun 2014
By Joy Sacalis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I started painting abstracts on my own as a way of healing from a divorce. Being curious about the meanings and interpretations of my art, I was delighted find this book-Making Marks! In it are the answers to my questions! The author, Elaine Clayton offers great insight and provides a clear path for you to learn how to interpret your own doodles, art, or stream drawings, as she calls them. Her stories resonate so true to me. She explains her journey and her process clearly. It's fascinating! I find the exercises in the book liberating. They are a great way to get unstuck from self judgement and build self confidence. Read this if you are interested in: intuition, the creative force, learning who you really are, learning about your emotions, knowing yourself better, unlocking your potential, a self healing journey, self care, doing intuitive readings from stream drawings for yourself and others...I highly recommend this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Like palm reading 11 May 2014
By Collene Irvin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I selected this book because I thought it would be fun and give me some insight into expanding my doodle drawings, but what I got was much different. It’s basically a book on making stream drawings and interpreting what they mean and in some cases even predicting their meanings.

The author explains what stream drawing is and how it helps capture emotions and gain deeper empathy. Then she takes it to the next step and that is how to interpret these drawings. This is less a book on art techniques and more a book about feelings and understanding them.

The author provides many exercises on making marks and interpreting them. Eventually the book progresses in drawing and interpreting your own dreams. It became a little too transcendental for me. It became more like reading palms.

Also included were some drawing games and indexes to various exercises and figures used in the book.

I thought what she did write was well organized and the author seemed to really know what she was talking about, I just found it too far off to enjoy it and I really just wanted to make some fun doodles.

This book was given to me by Atria books through NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taking understanding who you are to another level through art! 27 May 2014
By Sandra - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I read Making Marks a few weeks ago and since then I have worked intuitively with my own "marks" and was surprised and pleased at the results. At first I couldn't see anything but as I allowed myself to move more into a non-judgmental state of what was on the paper all sorts of images sprang to mind. The subconscious is full of information and eager to share. Plus coloring in is so much fun.
Thank you Ms. Clayton for your process to intuitively connect with the inner self.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making Time for Making Marks 27 May 2014
By A. Wells - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book gave me permission to mark up the page without regard for structure or boundaries, then open my mind to the subtle shapes and forms of familiar images. At first I think I tried too hard to "see" something in every curve and angle, and I was a little frustrated, but after a series of markings, I relaxed and let the page speak to me instead of my trying to invent a hidden story.

One of the valuable things I'm learning with this process is that by allowing myself to set aside the time it takes to make marks on a blank page, I'm giving myself permission to leave the demands of an ordinary day and explore my creative intuition. I'm enjoying this process and recommend this book.
