Great designs 1 Oct 2011

Not made any of these designs yet as my shop is not quite finished and the book only just arrived,(excuses, excuses). There are some really great designs in this book and they can all be adapted too. Designs could be elongated, made hexagonal, contrasting woods used, all sorts. I would say for me that making these lamps, and I will make most of them or versions of them at least, will be a jumping off point into new styles with other materials. If you are anything like handy you could turn out one or more of these lamps. The book itself is of very nice quality and the photographs are to a very high standard. To conclude; This book already has my admiration because I took a chance on it and I know that it will pay back time and again by being a starting point for many great creations. Well worth the price

If you are a craftsman and love doing a bit of carpentry and love Japanese design and style this book is for you!!!

I am only a casual DIY enthusiast and found some isolated parts of this book slightly technical at times, so it would be handy to have some fair maths skills and previous experience with various wood types. Anyway this is a great source of inspiration and let's face it a gem of a step-by-step book (not many books seem to be self explanitry these days), the design aspect is great and discusses the great Shoji style. I was slightly put off by how the wiring techniques was situated around the (two pin) plugs, but i guess it's just the case of buying the wiring kits and a slight bit of common sense. Also it may of been nice to include a section on various lighting techniques i.e. using these lamps/ lanterns in scenario's and use of hidden lighting etc.

All in all 8/10 for this good book.
