Product Description

How do you galvanize a company, so that from top to bottom it is geared for success? The author's experience of leadership is second to none, and his achievements at ICI speak for themselves. But how did he salvage ICI from its slump? Reflecting on his years as chairman of ICI, and on his experience of leadership in the Royal Navy, the author offers commonsense advice on all aspects of business life and management. In particular, he demonstrates how it is possible to run a company with time and respect for everyone involved, and how this enables a company to excel.

A well structured, thought-out book, in fact handed down to me by my stepfather with many a dog-eared page. (I didn't actually buy it but I feel compelled to give it my highest recommendation so I hope Amazon don't mind too much.) Packed with colourful anecdotes this text is certainly one I will take great pleasure re-reading in the future. Covering the many facets of leadership and simple but brilliant theory of 'Judo' management Sir John's book is a must read for anyone considering the subject of Leadership.

Excellent book for somebody interested in the leadership studies. Really helped me with my "Make a difference" assignment.
The writer - a successful businessman and lately TV presenter - has plenty of pieces of advice, suggestions and observations to share with anybody from his rich long career. Moreover, it is not a boring reading as somebody could expect as there are plenty of funny stories or descriptions from his life making the book really enjoyable to read.
Highly recommended.

By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Computers are smaller and faster than ever. Cell phones seem to acquire more bells and whistles every day. Mind-boggling advances in technology are changing the practice of business. Yet John Harvey-Jones, former chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries, one of the world's largest chemical companies, maintains that the basic tenets of leadership - decisiveness, daring, patience, empathy and know-how - will never change, regardless of external developments and advances. Boiled down to its essence, business is about dealing fairly and honestly with people, and determining the best ways to motivate them for maximum productivity. Harvey-Jones discusses in detail the CEO's relationship with the board of directors, effective time management, and the inevitable psychological and intellectual battles that leaders must fight. The book's recurring theme is a strong emphasis on business fundamentals, insights based on Harvey-Jones' many years of experience at the highest peaks of business. We encourage not only CEOs and presidents but also upper-level managers who harbor lofty ambitions to benefit from his astute observations.
