Product Description

Product Description

Making History explores the work and achievement of the Fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries, London, from its foundation in the early eighteenth century to the present day. It features milestones in the discovery, recording, interpretation and communication of Britainâs past through its material footprint. Contrasting beliefs about the past before the Society was founded, it reveals how new discoveries and technologies have â over the past three hundred years â transformed our understanding of our island history. This lavishly illustrated book will showcase the unique treasures of Britainâs oldest learned society concerned with the study of the past. It will include antiquities of international importance, detailed records of lost buildings and objects, paintings of ancient sites and landscapes by Constable, Girtin, Turner, Blake and other great artists commissioned by the Society and its Fellows, royal portraits from Henry VI to Mary Tudor and rare historical manuscripts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making History , 28 Sep 2007
By Andrew Selkirk (London, GB) - See all my reviews
Making History is a catalogue of an exhibition held at the Royal Academy from 15th September to the 2nd December 2007. It consists of 15 essays by 15 different authors introducing the exhibition, with an introduction by David Starkey.

The exhibition celebrates the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Antiquaries in 1707, and many of the objects come from the collections of the society. It is particularly strong in engravings and paintings, notably a fine collection of portraits of late Medieval kings, donated to the society in 1829 by the Rev Thomas Kerrich. It also illustrates the development of archaeology over the past 300 years, with an emphasis on Medieval objects and topographical studies. The book is very well illustrated throughout in colour, and is an essential source for those who wish to see how archaeology developed in Britain.
