Making it - Women entrepreneurs reveal the secrets of their success
by Lou Gimson and Allison Mitchell - Capstone. ISBN 978-1-841-12700-2
Reviewed by serial entrepreneur Valerie Dwyer, founder of My Wonderful Life(tm) Coach, Everything is Possible(tm), and other enterprises. []

It's all about ATTITUDE - how right - how true!! The theme running through this entire book is the power of belief to make the life and business that you want. This resounds with me because when running `visioning' sessions with women entrepreneurs my focus on success strategies emphasises the importance and power of belief, so this is definitely a good read for everyone searching for or refreshing their personal or corporate (small businesses definitely included) vision. While this book is aimed at motivating women to put their foot on the enterprise pedal -even seasoned and successful entrepreneurs would benefit from time out to read it.

Making it is easy reading material and has an extremely useful format. Carefully constructed chapters combine a clever balance of `mentoring moments'; personal `entrepreneurs' experiences' shared by the authors'; interviews with successful women entrepreneurs; `making it happen for you' that stimulates further thought and includes a useful `check your attitude' section followed by the workable and well worth doing (and all important) `three steps to action' - without which all ambitions are destined to remain just dreams and visions.

"It's all about Attitude" states the back cover boldly of Making it - Women entrepreneurs reveal the secrets of their success. This book has been written to examine why and how some women have managed to create very successful businesses, whilst juggling their family and home lives, but also, more importantly how you can join them in being a success too.

Attitude is the acronym that has been used for the chapter titles, Accentuate the Positive, Total belief, Trust, Innovate, To aim high, Unstoppable, Determined and Enthusiasm, and is very much the dominant theme running throughout the book. It is all about how YOU are in control, and YOUR attitude can determine whether or not your business is a success or a failure. If you are lacking motivation, or feeling a lack of focus or direction then this is certainly a good book to pick up.

Each chapter is made up of Mentoring moments, Entrepreneurs experience and an in-depth section where the authors meet and discuss business with a range of successful businesswomen. Whilst that in itself is interesting, it is really the last section of each chapter which is most useful. It is all very well reading about successful people, but that can leave you feeling even more flat and confused about what to do next. The final part of each chapter takes what has been achieved and breaks it down into a few simple bullet points and demonstrates you how you too can model that success. You then have to complete an `attitude exercise' to see where you score, and finally you are given 3 steps to help improve your performance in this area.

I bought this book because I'm a woman and wanted to know if there was anything a fellow female could teach me in regards of business models. Turns out, "being a woman" in this case means "being a mother", which I'm not. Also, a lot of the information given is not scientific (and has been proven wrong by Psychology by now) so I wasn't too thrilled. In fact, some of the suggestions given are just... well, silly. Something along the lines of "find out what is stopping you from being successful and just be successful" isn't very helpful, is it?
Having said this, I did enjoy reading the featured women's stories. It is always inspiring to know how people can make it in the face of adversity. But take these stories away and... well, I feel it's just a hollow book. Sorry, Allison Mitchell. Don't hate me.

Another fantastic, inspirational book and well planned out, each section talks to a successful businesswoman and uses their tips and feedback for the reader to go and use to become successful too.
