Review

'...remarkably comprehensive in its scope, covering the history, geology, natural history, agriculture and many peripheral topics in detail. You should read it from start to finish (several times).' --"BBC Wildlife Magazine"
'This is an excellent and very readable book.' --"The Anglo-Hellenic Review"

Product Description

This text aims to help the visitor to Crete understand its landscape. The authors explain how the island's peculiar and extraordinary features, moulded and modified by centuries of human activity, have come together to create today's landscape. They explain the formation and ecology of Crete's mountains and coastline, and examine contemporary threats to the island's natural beauty. The book draws on a range of evidence - field observations, archaeology, ancient and medieval documents, place-names, tree-rings and standing buildings. It should be of interest to general readers and travellers with an interest in Crete's landscape, natural history and history; and to students and scholars of Mediterranean landscape history, geography, historical ecology and archaeology.

This is the best guide about the island and it's inhabitants in the market today. Not a convenient size to carry around
in your backpack but a wealth of information about geology, flaura and fauna, people, traditional architecture and much more.
Definetly you are going to learn something new about
the island,as this book covers such a wide range of subjects and time.

The detail and the breadth of knowledge would be overawing if the book were not so approachable in its layout and use of accessible language. Many eye-opening concepts and ideas which could potentially be transferable to other parts of Greece with similarly interesting results. A great introduction (for me at least) to the concept of an archaeology of landscape. I highly recommend it.

As recently being fortunate enough to renovate a cottage in west Crete, I felt the need for knowledge of the island, its history and environment, that went beyond what one finds in guide books. This softback book fulfills this need really well and I would say do not be put off by the fact that it has been written by serious academics: it is easy and fascinating to dip into and extensively illustrated: thoroughly recommended if you have a love for the island and its people.
