This is the most practical and straightforward guide to change that I have read. Much writing on change asks that you buy into a particular philosophy or undergo some form of personal development yourself before being qualified to lead change.

Jane Northcote's approach - grounded in her own consulting experience - gets straight to the point: change is about results and results come from effective action. The book is therefore a practical guide to taking effective action.

For me the distinctive part is the need to be aware of the effects of the action once you have taken it. Too often organisations get into action without really understanding and reacting to the effects of their action. In these circumstances change is often short-lived.

This book will help anyone - whether a manager, a consultant or someone who just feels a bit 'stuck' - to be much more effective in taking action and driving change.

It's also written in a lively and clear style and is beautifully laid out.

This book is about change and action, how to make things happen. It has an honest and authentic feel to it, weaving threads of rich, illustrative stories alongside checkpoints and ideas. Jane Northcote comes across as a rigorous and experienced exponent; you sense she has not only been there but also thought hard about the process, what are the best ways, what works and what does not. She imparts the wisdom in a very readable style with clear messages relevant for both internal as well as external change agents.

It is a small point but what helps seal the difference with the mass of management books is the quality of production; layout, materials, little touches, artwork & illustrations all add up and complement the central ideas.

If you want an accessible reminder how best to go about change, the steps to take and those to avoid, this should leave you with simple, clear & actionable messages; as a change practitioner, it was valuable to mentally check off points as I went along. And I agree with a previous reviewer; it is a great book to have on the desk as a prompt and an aide memoire.

This is a practical and useful reference book for getting things done.

If you work for an organisation that's trying to make changes, you will find something here to help you.

I've recently used it with a client who was stuck - they knew that they wanted things to change but couldn't explain what they expected their people to do differently. The ideas in this book helped them to move forward.

It's an easy read with case studies and illustrations to bring the ideas to life. And you can dip in and out, it still all makes sense.

I agree with a previous reviewer - far more useful and enjoyable than a PRINCE2 manual....

This is a lovely book, which is not a word you can often apply to your standard business book. Full of beautiful illustrations and typography, it's a delight to read. Not only from an aesthetic point of view though, this book offers plenty of real world examples and insight which help you to make sense of organisational change with a focus on the 'doing' part, sometimes significantly harder than the thinking part upfront. From the first sentence the author sets out her intent and the narrative carries you through the process.

This book is a simple no nonsense practical guide to actioning change in an organisation. I keep this book on my desk as a reminder of how I should be working. As a business change consultant I am more than happy to recommend this book for anyone working in a similar role. "Making Change Happen" sets out a clear, simple and easy to understand method to follow and reference. I will definitely be using some of the techniques highlighted in this book in my day job. Great illustrations, and case studies too. Well done Jane - great job.
