Product Description

Review
In 'Making Change Happen' Jane Northcote makes implementing change both easy and accessible. She distils management consulting methodologies into simple and powerful truths. Uplifting, inspirational and exciting - this is the 'start here' button for anyone involved in business change. Change is possible, you can do it, today, and here's how. --Robert Smithbury, business owner of Precise Business Solutions

This book has taught me the difference between action and activity. I have learnt that things only get done by taking direct action and that sometimes it is too easy just to be active. Since reading this book, I find myself questioning - is this action or just activity? I ask it of myself and my managers and I never leave a meeting without everyone being clear on what has to be done to make things happen. Like all the best things, this is surprisingly simple, but it has made a big difference to my company. --Nigel Phillips, managing director of Unity Information Systems

This book has immense practical application for all businesses. There are disciplines in it which will fundamentally improve organisational performance. Down to earth, straightforward and practical. Jane Northcote writes in a way that is both modest and highly compelling - a rare combination." --Nick Bush, consultant

5.0 out of 5 stars Activity is not effective action - beautiful book, 18 May 2008
I really like this book. As a change consultant I found it a very useful summary of what makes the difference when implementing change, and why so often change efforts do not work. I particularly like the emphasis on effective action and the distinction between action and activity. The tips Jane Northcote offers for "doing it" as opposed to busying oneself in activity are particularly useful.

This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who regards PRINCE2 as the answer to effective change. So many projects become bogged down by ever more complex project governance, project plans and logs; yet nothing or very little actually changes. A lot more effective action, and significantly less PRINCE2 and things might get moving in the right direction, with much less effort.

"Making change happen" is well written, accessible and beautifully presented. I would recommend it to anyone who is involved in change initiatives whether as an implementer, or as a willing or unwilling participant; all of us really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and straightforward , 10 Mar 2008
By Nicolas Bush "open chord business innovation" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the most practical and straightforward guide to change that I have read. Much writing on change asks that you buy into a particular philosophy or undergo some form of personal development yourself before being qualified to lead change.

Jane Northcote's approach - grounded in her own consulting experience - gets straight to the point: change is about results and results come from effective action. The book is therefore a practical guide to taking effective action.

For me the distinctive part is the need to be aware of the effects of the action once you have taken it. Too often organisations get into action without really understanding and reacting to the effects of their action. In these circumstances change is often short-lived.

This book will help anyone - whether a manager, a consultant or someone who just feels a bit 'stuck' - to be much more effective in taking action and driving change.

It's also written in a lively and clear style and is beautifully laid out.
