Making Amends

This story revolves around long forgotten Viking treasure, drug smuggling into the UK and the personal battles to be fought and resolved by an undercover military intelligence officer.
The book begins with the 10th century legend of a band of Vikings, allied to a Welsh Prince, who heavily outnumbered, lose a bloody hand to hand battle on the Llyn peninsula, before they escape to become part of the rich tapestry that is now Wales.
Moving to the present day, Neil Morgan has been working undercover for Military Intelligence in the murky world of drug dealing. He has been tasked with identifying the sources of drugs smuggled into the UK and helping to apprehend the key players, only to discover that his brother-in-law is deeply involved.
Following an injury Morgan is taking extended leave at home when he receives a desperate cry for help from his brother-in -law and sister. He races back to the family farm in North Wales, to find the fire brigade fighting a blaze roaring through the barns and his brother-in-law and several mysterious guests missing from their rented holiday cottage.
With help from the police and the military, he begins the search for the men who have taken Pete, his brother-in-law, captive. Vicious rogue drug smugglers they want Pete to hand over his personal drugs stash and have undertaken to murder Morgan; they want revenge for his successes in the field – the drug barons and dealers have put a price on his head.
A relentless pursuit in stormy weather involving fast powerboats, helicopters and the police culminates in a bloody shoot out at sea. Morgan makes an unsettling discovery which nearly brings the killer instinct back to life.
The Morgan family then unites to follow up an exciting, potentially life changing discovery.

This is a well crafted story and fits well into its chosen setting---the landscape and culture of the northern part of Cardigan Bay in Wales. The characters are well drawn and credible, although a little too "Gung Ho!" at times for my tastes, but for the most part the events and situations are plausible for a crime/thriller of this type. If you like a good pacy yarn then I would certainly recommend it to you.

Having said that, there are some limitations which the availability of a publisher's editor would have avoided. The novel is written in the first person and the narrator changes according to who is leading in any particular situation. This can be tricky at the best of times but the various narrators all seem to speak/think with the same voice and attitude. A woman's voice occasionally might have been a welcome contrast to the testosterone-laden urgency of the male protagonists.

The detail of the locations is handled well and conveys real intimacy but a broader descriptive approach to this beautiful area would
have been advantageous. The region is important to the book and the writer develops an interesting connection back to Viking residents of the 10th Century. This creates a sense of permanence which enhances the unity of the local people.

It is necessary for the storyline to create links with the Army and Intelligence Services and there does seem to be some awkwardness in handling the characterisations and practices which could be improved. This is not, however, critical to enjoyment of the book. At this price it really is worth the effort in buying it.
