Made to Be Loved for a Lifetime

3D printed using sturdy (and non-toxic) nylon plastic, Makies are meant to be played with and built to last. They bear the British Toy and Hobby Association's Lion Mark, signifying high standards of quality and safety. With swappable parts and upgradable bodies, Makies are designed to be enhanceable, fixable, and loved for a lifetime.

Kind to the Earth

Makies are produced in London by folks who believe in sustainability and local production. Their bodies are 3D printed in the UK and Amsterdam, and the process is highly efficient and waste-free. Their clothes are made by hand in MakieLab's workshop, and even their packaging is sourced in the UK.

My nine year old daughter had started to graduate on to Monster High away from Barbie (no, I did not encourage her, btw!) when I discovered the Makie box. They send you the box, and it introduces your chosen small person to the whole concept in a charming, slightly 1950's-ish packaging. Basically it's a code to enter after they have gone on to the website and agonised endlessly for several months, in our case, over the exact hair colour and length, the right eyes, the right ears (it can all get very cute-pixie if you want) and all kinds of details like hand shape.

The 3D printing takes just a few days. What comes through the post is a lovely doll in a big tube, no plastic in sight. The size is generous and the clothes are professional finished but don't feel 'factory', if you see what I mean.

There are tons of accessories, which we try to limit to get the most out of them, including superb glasses (good for my short sighted daughter!). The impression I get is that the company has lots of plans for more personalisation and charming - rather than just cutesy - extras.

A couple of other things which are very cool. You can actually make boy dolls just as easily, and a lot of the clothes are interchangeable. The reason being that Makie *do not look like Barbies*. They can stand up, without shoes on, because their legs are sturdy and their feet aren't weirdly high heel shaped. They aren't stretched to look borderline far too skinny and if they do have blonde hair, it flops naturally.

My daughter is super interested in the whole 3D printing process now too, which is a bonus.

Whilst the price precludes having a massive Barbie like collection, for most people, what you're getting with one is an open door in to a growing ecosystem if creative goodies and a community of makers all exchanging ideas. Not too bad for a doll!

Perfect present for any person at any age. They encourage creativity and new ideas by offering free patterns to design your own clothes and show you how to add makeup to make your doll your own. Stuck for ideas? The forums offer hundreds of helpful pictures and tutorials and of course the dolls themselves!
The dolls are a wonderful sturdy quality and are all handmade in London where if at any point you have any queries or suggestions they are more than happy to help you and have always make sure your doll either he/she will greet you in there good quality handmade outfit of your choice in a recyclable tube which has in the past been shown to make a good carrier if you have any little ones who want to take him/her on holiday.
Overall if you are in the market for a doll yourself or deciding whether to get it as a gift go for it. I currently have 3 makies and am choosing my 4th. Instead of buying some commercial junk, go for something special. You honestly wont regret it.:)

I first came across Makies over a year ago through the MakieLabs iPad app and have since purchased more than six of these versatile little creations. Not only is the design aspect fun, it also makes for very unique experience. No other doll will look like the one you create and I just love that. With the bonus of being able to create and save as many 'virtual' Makies online for free before choosing the ideal one you wish to buy, I think any child (boy or girl) or even adult, at any age will love how creative the experience is. They can even create a mini Makie version of themselves which is just amazing :)

The doll is 3D printed, so unlike other dolls is not a factory mass produced item. The dolls have an interesting feel to them. They are very light and almost feel like porcelain, but they are very durable, even in little hands. I feel safe leaving one with my three year old niece to play with as I know it won't break easily. She loves them so much that I already have a mini version of her on order to give her for next year ;)

The hands, arms, legs and head are removable, which allows for easier flexibility with dressing the doll and the ability to pose and keep that pose indefinitely is a definite plus. The dolls are made with a more natural shaped body (not too thin or shapely like a Barbie or the like) and this along with the flat feet lend to the ability of being able to stand unaided. I have been able to use this ability myself to take photos and make stop motion capture videos, which just goes to show what can be done with a little imagination.

The Makie website itself has a forum for discussion on creating things for your doll, modifying it or just to show off your creation with a very friendly audience. The staff are wonderful and very open to suggestion.

The dolls themselves are amazing. I like mine more than I like any play or collector doll that I have. They combine the wonderful articulation of Monster High with the expensive look of a collector's item. I also imagine that a Makie would easily survive lots of play. Even as an adult, I appreciate having a doll that is both fully unique and fully fixable--if I break any part of one of my Makies it can be replaced. This is really the best doll buying experience I have had in a while. Before I got my first Makie, I knew the experience would be special but I wasn't prepared for just how special. It's like a cross between buying a doll and designing a character on a computer game, but exponentially better. It hit me after a couple of weeks: my two dolls would not exist if I hadn't bought them! That's a very special feeling.

The ability to create a truly custom doll is not exaggerated. The fact that there are slider bars in the doll creator means that you can make even subtle changes to get your doll just right and so many aspects of the doll's looks can be changed: pierced ears or not, nose width, nostrils' width, eye shape and height and tilt and really so many more. Then there are separate wigs available and different hands so that your creation can hold things or point or make a peace sign. I didn't anticipate just how much fun it would be to have the extra hands, but it adds a lot.

MakieLab is a great company that I really love doing business with. They have A+ customer service--my first Makie had a small crack/irregularity of about 1mm at the shoulder joint and they sent a new arm right away. They're also great about leaving wigs unglued if you want to change wigs or about leaving the face blank if you prefer. Too, I appreciate their "science is cool" vibe. I just don't think it gets better than this.
