Product Description

Tzenni Boccamera wasn't a soldier or a diplomat. She was an engineer. But when Tzenni's sister Catha was captured by soldiers from a rival Spire, there was no one else to go to Catha's rescue. Tzenni didn't expect the rescue to involve a sarcastic bodyguard, a plot to bring down the Spire, or an alien species. And she certainly hadn't meant to fall in love...

'If you like your SF full of adventure and social drama – think Georgette Heyer meets Louis McMaster Bujold with a hefty dose of wit and slightly reminiscent of the early Dune books – then this is the book for you.'

'The plot twists and turns with plenty of action and excitement, but for me the real joy was in the characters. Wells’ heroine, Tzenni Boccamera, is an engaging and loveable geek; a brilliant engineer, happier working with machines than dealing with people, but loyal and determined enough to face the many challenges she encounters bravely, ably assisted by her bodyguard, the cynical, witty and hard-as-nails Innes Liang'

'If you’re looking for a SF adventure novel of manners or a vividly realised science-fictional secondary world, [The Books of Requite are] heartily recommended'

OK, I lied. There are no giants in this book, but all the others get a look-in somewhere. Set on a distant planet colonised by humans four hundred years ago and apparently now completely cut off from its parent civilisation, The Maker's Mask combines elements of fantasy, detective novel, Regency romance and cyberpunk with a healthy dose of humour. The plot twists and turns with plenty of action and excitement, but for me the real joy was in the characters. Wells' heroine, Tzenni Boccamera, is an engaging and loveable geek; a brilliant engineer, happier working with machines than dealing with people, but loyal and determined enough to face the many challenges she encounters bravely, ably assisted by her bodyguard, the cynical, witty and hard-as-nails Innes Liang. The supporting characters are all wonderfully vivid and three-dimensional - no cardboard cut-out villains here - and contribute to making Requite a world I can really believe in.

A wonderful book. I can't wait to read the sequel, and hope to see more from the author in future.

I'm not a fast reader but I devoured this in about 3 sittings. The setting is fantastically rich and intriguing (a mix of almost arcane high tech, low tech, and a little bit of magic for good measure); the plot is full of action and twistier than a cat-attacked ball of wool in places; and the dialogue is sharp and funny. Tzenni is an engaging heroine who would give Elizabeth Bennet a run for her money; a determined, fiesty woman whose curiosity and sense of responsibility allows her to overcome her short comings, which include a paralyzing fear of stairs. Her Darcy is a suitably mysterious and brooding character, plaqued by an over-abundance of interferring family, and her body guard is a style-conscious, blue-haired swordsperson with a tongue as sharp as its sword.

If you like your SF full of adventure and social drama - think Georgette Heyer meets Louis McMaster Bujold with a hefty dose of wit and slightly reminiscent of the early Dune books - then this is the book for you. I can't wait to read the second part!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book 17 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I was fascinated by the world and taken with the heroine, Tzenni, from the first moment of her anxious approach to a hostile city-Spire where she immediately falls foul of the authorities, but never loses her intense desire to understand how everything works. And then there are her bodyguard Innes, who fences and insults people with equal skill, and annoying sisters, and enemies who turn out to be more complicated than that, and sneaky pirate families, and people who are more concerned with protocol than the fact that their world's about to collapse, and fascinating technology. An excellent read, great fun, and highly recommended - as is the second book, The Hawkwood War, in which the story continues.
