I was brought up in Penzance and was glad to leave it at eighteen. Every time I go there I have to burst out laughing at the sleeziness and ineptness of the place. That is partly why I found Lynda Chater's book so very funny. The characters end up in Penzance on their jaunt to dispose of the body and play act the demise of the wife beating Gideon. The place they stay in reminds me of several hotels in the town and their description of the one way system is so close to reality. As a former native I have even found myself heading back in the direction I came from!
The author is a brilliant wit and I love her portrayal of the gullible Angie who thinks she is smart, but finds herself out of her depth whatever direction she turns. The scene near the end with the buff envelope and the slobering hack is something that would work beautifully on film. In fact, why hasn't anyone snapped up this book for a movie? It reads like a perfect script for a comedy.
I have just started Lynda Chater's other book 'That Devil Called Love'. If you have read 'Makeover' you will love this too. A real scream from the word go.
