Review

Robert has a gift for helping women look and feel beautiful. His knack for selecting just the right colors, combined with his skillful artistry in applying them, creates the perfect formula for bringing out every woman's inner beauty --Rhonda Shasteen, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Mary Kay Inc.

Robert Jones is a magician! --Florentine Pabst-Schober, Marie Claire

...the definative guide to women who want to look their best - without spending a fortune --Family Circle magazine

I've been reading fashion magazines and frequenting make-up aisles since age 12, about a decade now. I read the Kevin Aucoin and Bobbie Brown books. Until last week I thought I knew make-up pretty well. Nope, nuh-uh, wrong. This book should be required reading for anyone who buys so much as a tube of tinted lip gloss. It covers the fundamental principles of make-up as an art. You come away knowing not only how to apply mascara, but *why* to apply mascara... which features it accentuates, how it fits into an overall make-up regimen, how different mascara formulas work and how they should therefore be applied, and so on. He does this for foundation (can you explain the difference between liquid, creme, powder, liquid-to-powder, tint, and stick?), concealer, blush, lip, and eye make-up. He goes over applications for different skin types, tones, ages, complexions, bone structures, etc. And he does it all in an extremely clear way that's quick, easy, and very fun to read. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It'll completely change the way you think about make-up, take you from dabbling amateur to sophisticated artist. And of course the before-and-after makeover pics are lots of fun to look at! --dizzerena

This is an inspirational primer on makeup technique. Most helpful are the diagrams which demonstrate the recomended placement of the different types of makeup. While much of the information is basic, the author assumes that the reader has mastered basic makeup skills, ie, brush technique and blending. The focus is on contouring the face and eyes; little detail is given on addressing major problems. The makeover photos are fun. Women of all ages and races are included and the author includes notes about his objectives and application with each photo. I applaud the approach that everyone can be beautiful. This book is part inspiration and part how to. Bottom line, practice makes perfect and don't be too serious about stuff that washes off. Buy the book and have some fun! --Antigone Walsh

A sizeable part of this book is made up of remarkable before and after pictures of women of all ages and all races. It is reassuring that they don't all look like models too. He also writes about the importance of good skincare and then goes into the basic application of all aspects of makeup.

I found this book to be very up-to-date in recommending suitable colours for every skintone and ethnicity. Robert Jones describes his 'look' as 'glam girl next door' and it really comes across in the methods and colours he uses. If you are into 'way-out' looks you will probably find this boring as he is more concerned with emphasising one's features in a natural way, almost like Bobbi Brown's approach.

Here are my (few) critisicms. The 'after' photograps look very photoshopped and please correct me if I'm wrong Robert! He also seems to be a big advocate of contouring but I can't see how that works outside of photography. It is also geared towards only one fully made up look and doesn't give much guidance for seasonal variation or make up for low-key events.

All in all though it is definitely worth looking at especially for brides and even the mother of the bride!

A wide cross section of ages and ethnic types used as models but unfortunately there is some very heavy-handed photoshop retouching in the 'after' pictures. Also the artist is very keen on contouring which is only really useful for softbox photography and not everyday makeup.
A very limited range of colours and shading techniques used.

USeful if you are going to have your portrait taken and will be doing your own makeup. Or if you are a fashion model who also does her own makeup.

As some of previous reviewers said this book has some serious Photoshoping (image editing) done. Especially to after photos so of course it looks like the girl is beautiful. I understand that is ok and needed for fashion magazine but in this books it goes to the point where you can really not see the skin since it has been so blurred and smoothed. As it is not enought that there is also good lighting during photo shoot that is making the difference (from these photos and your future photos). Then you cannot see what was the real result of the makeup and you are definitely gonna be disappointed when your skin does not look as in photos while you will wander what you did wrong.

Also I was expecting so many much more techniques and explanations. For example I would admit that it is great to have a recommendation for each eye type but it would be useful to have some more styles for each type or general styles.
Before & After transformations are also not explained well. I would prefer to see less transformations but with more step by step approach.

In all I am pretty disappointed in this book, especially after reading such great reviews on amazon.com (not co.uk) for this book. I was expecting to learn more and have this book as a constant reference, but I think it will be the case of read once and leave. :(
