Book Description

Make your own Android App. MIT's App Inventor is the easiest way to learn how to make an Android app, but if you don't know how to get started our latest guide can help. From author James Sherar, "Make Your Own Android App: Your Unofficial Intro To MIT App Inventor" goes over the basics of making your very own app for Android using the educational App Inventor tool. Take the first step toward learning to make apps instead of just using them.

App Inventor makes mobile app development highly visual, and highly intuitive. It is an easy and fun way for the uninitiated to learn about computer programming, and is at the same time a productive tool for advanced programmers alike. It is worth mentioning that despite being in its infancy — that is to say beta phase — this platform still offers a robust set of programming tools for all levels of programming ability and is ideal for use in education. Indeed, a major angle being promoted by MIT/Google is its instrumentality in teaching and for introducing anyone to programming, particularly young people, in say a high school setting. Although, it has a much broader target audience than that. That is, adult non-programmers who wish to teach themselves, and professional programmers.

This guide aims to show anyone the basics of using App Inventor in the hopes that more people will create instead of just consuming.

This guide will teach you:
What App Inventor is capable of
Who should be using it, from beginners to pros
Setting up App Inventor on your computer
How to develop a simple "Hello World" app using Inventor
How to add your masterpiece to Google Play

3.0 out of 5 stars Not much detail - only a bare introduction. 16 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very cheap introduction (and only an introduction!) to app writing using App Inventor - but you'd learn far more on the MIT website and on YouTube.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money! 27 Jan. 2014

This book, quite literally, takes four dollars and thirty minutes of your life away and in return all it does is encourage you to go to the mit app inventor website where they have - wait for it - actual clickable graphical elements and video guides for how to use the amazingly powerful new mit google app inventor.
It's a shame that in the simplicity of online DIY publishing is being abused by charlatans with nothing new to say except "go to the really good website made by goole and MIT". Save your money.

I have just finished this book and it was worth every penny. I have already started to make my own apps and so far so good. Very helpful and if you're a full time programmer, don't worry. You can figure out what they are trying to tell you.

Cheap enough but also very short. Was disappointed in the book. Had to purchase another book to gain more depth.

I liked the MIT App Inventor. It has it's limits, but it's an interesting tool for beginners and others who are just curious.
