Product Description

Product Description

There is a vast amount of knowledge throughout the world about how to make the harmonica sound better and play better, but little of it is written down. This fully illustrated book solves the problem. It contains sections on: how to buy a harmonica, common problems, advice about tools and techniques for using them, the basic parts of the chromatic harmonica, solutions to improve sound and functionality, experimenting on old harmonicas, tuning, and much more. For chromatic players, but diatonic players will learn just as much.

First Sentence
We all buy harmonicas - they come from the factory in perfect condition-we play them carefully for a while-we treat them well - they behave wonderfully and mature, then eventually, after many years of faithful service we regretfully retire them...What a rubbish! Read the first page

I wonder if the person who designed the cover for this book can tell the difference between a chromatic and a diatonic harmonica. The artwork features very prominently a diatonic harmonica (10 reed Marine Band model). The book however exclusively deals with maintenance and tweaking of the chromatic model.
So, if you are a chromatic player, get this book. It will give you complete descriptions of all the parts of the harmonica and how to maintain them.
You will also find a couple of playing and tweaking tips.

Diatonic users should better get a book like "Creative Blues Harp: Diatonic Harmonica" by Harris J. Foghorn or "The Complete Harmonica Method: Diatonic" by Bobby Joe Holman.

Seems like a very useful book for the chromatic owner. As the previous reviewer said despite the cover art this book deals exclusively with Chromatic Harmonicas (although some of the material may be transferable).

Covers from sealing with beeswax to improve air-tightness, right up to changing the shape of the comb using Isopon (scary). Only 4 stars because there are one or two places it could use some better illustrations / photographs. Generally though theres nothing serious to complain of in a useful book at a bargain price.

This is the most extensive manual on maintaining a chromatic harmonica. Other reviewers have already pointed out the unfortunate cover that shows the wrong sort of harmonica. Fortunately, the contents seems much better. My experience is restricted to tuning and replacing reeds and wind savers. I am not sure that I trusts the part on tuning however. It says that a flag reed can be tuned by filing off a little weight. According to the Mel Bay Harmonicare Chart filing off something near the rivet lowers to tone. This makes sense, but it is the opposite of what you want. So one star off for the cover and one for the part on the tuning.
