Biography

Hot Hot Heat is a Canadian indie rock band formed in 1999 from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Dustin Hawthorne and Steve Bays had been in many different bands together since 1995 and met Hawley in 1998. In 1999, Hawley bought a Juno 6 keyboard and asked Bays to try playing it, as no one else knew how. Hawley took over the drums from Bays and Hawthorne played bass. Matthew Marnik, ... Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Riding the wave of retropunk with their debut Make Up the Breakdown, Vancouver natives Hot Hot Heat look set to sweep away Canada's reputation for bland beige-pop in a flash flood of jagged riffs, ska-flavoured skips and post mod(ern) hits. Despite their spiky and spangly leather-coated exterior, Hot Hot Heat are far more concerned with fun than fashion: frontman Steve Bays' hyperactive shrieks on "Oh Goddamnit" bring to mind a young Elvis Costello with a better sense of humour, while "Aveda" brings together the best (non-fist-shaking) bits of the Clash and early XTC. "Bandages" is destined to occupy indie disco playlists and ring throughout halls of residence for the foreseeable future. For Hot Hot Heat, the beat is king and Make Up the Breakdown's unrelenting three-minute anthems hold the court firmly in thrall. --Leslie Gilotti

Ok, so i admit i was rushing into things slightly when i bought this album, having only heard Bandages and taken my friend and her brothers word that it was amazing. But when your flight is leaving in 10 minutes you don't have valuable time to spare for decisions like these. So i got it, and i havnt regretted it once, it has become one of my favourite records of all time. The debut album from the Canadian group just leaves you wanting more. The opening track (Naked in the city again) sets the scene for what is a funky mix of keyboards, bass, guitar, and vocals. These guys know what they're doing and know how to do it well. Its a bit like rock disco, you just want to dance to it...but far far cooler. All the songs on the 10 track album without fail are catchy and you won't be able to get them out of your head for months. Hats off to the vocalist as well, whose lyrics can be touching and amusing at the same time. His voice is unusual, but unforgettable and just makes the distinctive sound which is Hot Hot Heat. Memorable tracks are the aforementioned Naked in the City again, Get in or get out, This Town, Aveda, Godammit, and Bandages (containing a 70s rock organ and man, does that work!). Last but my no means least is the hauntingly beautiful Cairo, which mixes prominent keyboard and bass (again this combination works fantastically), yet having a slightly offbeat jazzy feel to it as well, giving us a tour of the backstreets and the atmosphere of the mysterious city. Anyone who misses out on this truly special record will surely be thinking "Goddammit" in years to come. (Yeah thats a really bad joke i know...just buy the album!!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars This should be available on prescription! 2 May 2003

I am not only referring to "Bandages". This CD has really energized me throughout last month. The first time I heard HHH was on a Punk compilation and their song "Get In Or Get Out" truly stood out from the rest, probably because they are not a punk band. So I was quite confident I would have at least one good song to listen to when I picked up the CD. Wasn't I rewarded beyond my wildest expectations!
Every song is a refined piece of songwriting, the arrangements are plain and effective and although the material is quite varied there is a clear and unique band identity that emanates from the CD. The result is fresh, innovative, energetic and fun.
The reason why this band caught my attention is that I still have a sweet spot for XTC, Elvis Costello and other bands from those years (if you don't like HHH, you can safely blame Andy Partidge for his influence). But even if you are not an old fart like me, you will surely find something in it for you. My 8 year old daughter has stolen my CD!
HHH is a great band and "oh no! It's not a secret now"!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but Absolutley Brilliant 23 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD
Lets get this out of the way. This album is only really like The Sleepy Jackson Mini LP, and at 32 mins, manages the feat of being even shorter than The Strokes' Is This It.
OK, now to the review. Hot Hot Heat are one of those new bands that NME raves about, and hail from Canada, although they have taken the New York sound of The Strokes etc. and given it a good kick up the backside. Up until the final song, the keyboard player/lead vocalist of the band never slows down. This is fast paced stuff alright. Along with Guitars, this band also like the sound of the keyboard, mainly because the lead singer plays it. There are also tambourines and bells present in some of the songs, and it makes for a very enjoyable sound. The first 5 tracks are without a doubt the best, with Oh God Damnit and Get in Or Get Out particularly good, even showing up the excellent 1st single 'Bandages' It tails of a little in the 2nd half of the album, but there are still highlights in Save Us S.O.S. and This Town. For a debut, this is wonderful stuff, and I expect big things from them in the future. Are they New Wave, Punk. Well I'm rubbish at putting bands in genres, but they are good. Highly Energetic and only loses the mark for the shortness and a couple of songs that don't live up to the heights of the rest of the album.
