4.0 out of 5 stars A book about Leadersahip that's fun to read, 30 April 2003
By A Customer
Let's face it Leadership books are really dull, they mount up in your 'I really must read that sometime' pile and they all say the same thing. The lessons in here are mostly solid useful lessons and the main point is that they are fun to read and hold your attention, particularly if you watch the episode with each chapter. I have also found that I remember them far better than anything else I have read. This book is a great idea, it's based on a superb management role model, it's written for adults and is suprisingly high level in terms of its lessons.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor on management issues plus a re-hash of star trek episod, 25 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Star Trek fans might enjoy the synopses of some STNG but the alleged learning about management is poor. The format consists of a synopsis of a screened episode of STNG followed by a list of generalised statements supposedly following from the events described by Jean Luc Picard.

For this book to be useful to managers there needs to be more detailed discussion about why certain courses of action are better than others.Even a discussion of the alternative courses of action and their possible consequences would further an understanding of sound management principles. The principles about management need to be less generalised and should sound less like homilies. The reality is that the markets that the book is intended for, largely the U.S. and Europe are societies deeply affected by sexism, racism and homophobia. These issues cannot be readily addressed through the medium of STNG given that the society of Captain Picard has supposedly eradicated these human failings. The fact that most workers don't have the commitment and training of Starfleet Officers makes management of a workforce far more difficult. How does one encourage creativity, co-operation etc.? Analogies could have been drawn between the mission statements of companies and the aims of Starfleet.

While the basic idea of the book is good, it is poorly executed and is mostly aimed at Star Trek Fans. As someone who trains managers, I can't see me using it with any of my clients.
