Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Make Mine Mink (1960) was adapted from a West End stage farce, Breath of Spring. In a mansion block in Knightsbridge, a gang of middle-aged biddies decide to brighten up "the dullness of the tea time of life" by staging a series of robberies on furriers, then donating the proceeds to charitable concerns. Terry Thomas as a retired army officer leads the gang, which includes Athene Seyler and Hattie Jacques, on a series of capers that nearly go awry when their maid, Billie Whitelaw, an ex-con and also a resident of the block, falls for a police officer. Among many funny scenes is a particular gem between Seyler and Kenneth Williams, her nephew to whom she hopes to palm off a stolen mink, and another where Terry Thomas enters a low-down dive to the accompaniment of the "Harry Lime theme". The playing of the whole cast is second to none under the direction of Robert Asher, who with his cameraman disguises the stage origins of the piece very adeptly.

On the DVD: Make Mine Mink comes to DVD in 4:3 ratio with a mono soundtrack. The theatrical trailer is introduced by Terry Thomas, who presents us to his gang of fur thieves as the voice on the soundtrack announces him as "fur, fur funnier than you've seen him before". More TT tomfoolery can be found in the three-disc Terry Thomas Collection. --Adrian Edwards

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Old Fashioned Comedy, 14 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Make Mine Mink [DVD] [1960] (DVD)
Lovely comedy starring some of Britains finest talents as hilarious fur theives. Terry-Thomas is superb as the somewhat sexist, yet chivilerous in his own way, would-be Robin Hood. Hattie Jacques plays an ettiquette teacher who acts more like Wodehouse's boistrous Honoria Glossop. Together with Athene Seyler and Irene Handl they steal furs & give the proceeds to charity.

Other highlights include Billie Whitelaw as the ex-con maid who is kept out of the fun and Kenneth Williams in a brilliantly well-played cameo.

This is a great film to simply relax to. It's sweet, innocent, simple and very, very funny.

This review is from: Make Mine Mink [DVD] [1960] (DVD)
"Make Mine Mink" is absolutely delightful. I have removed a star only because of the full-screen ratio (4 : 3). Any character standing on the side of the screen gets cut off, which is a shame, especially when said character has dialogue. This film needs to be seen in letter-box format, but meanwhile let's thank the producers for giving us this comic gem in any format whatsoever. Other than this problem, which can be annoying, the transfer is very clear, and the sound-track is excellent.

With the exceptions of gap-toothed Terry-Thomas and the splendid Athene Seyler, many of these actors come from the zany "Carry On" flicks, and they are priceless, especially Hattie Jacques, who plays a hefty, hard-boiled professor of etiquette. "Make Mine Mink" is full of references to other movies, such as the "Third Man." And I do love the burglar, who insists that he's of the prewar school of larceny, and wouldn't think of doing bodily harm to anyone.

This comic heist film still has me laughing out loud. But the movie ought to be reproduced in its original format of wide screen so we can appreciate the fun to its fullest extent!

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant film, 4 Jul 2002
Another Terry Thomas classic. This time he teams up with a band of women crooks. They get out of trouble quicker than they get into it. Hattie Jacques and Athene Seyler are brilliant in the elevator scene. Kenneth Williams and Irene Handl both make appearances in this film. It is a true british classic comedy.
