From Amazon.co.uk

Make Mine Mink (1960) was adapted from a West End stage farce, Breath of Spring. In a mansion block in Knightsbridge, a gang of middle-aged biddies decide to brighten up "the dullness of the tea time of life" by staging a series of robberies on furriers, then donating the proceeds to charitable concerns. Terry Thomas as a retired army officer leads the gang, which includes Athene Seyler and Hattie Jacques, on a series of capers that nearly go awry when their maid, Billie Whitelaw, an ex-con and also a resident of the block, falls for a police officer. Among many funny scenes is a particular gem between Seyler and Kenneth Williams, her nephew to whom she hopes to palm off a stolen mink, and another where Terry Thomas enters a low-down dive to the accompaniment of the "Harry Lime theme". The playing of the whole cast is second to none under the direction of Robert Asher, who with his cameraman disguises the stage origins of the piece very adeptly.

On the DVD: Make Mine Mink comes to DVD in 4:3 ratio with a mono soundtrack. The theatrical trailer is introduced by Terry Thomas, who presents us to his gang of fur thieves as the voice on the soundtrack announces him as "fur, fur funnier than you've seen him before". More TT tomfoolery can be found in the three-disc Terry Thomas Collection. --Adrian Edwards

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Old Fashioned Comedy 14 July 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Lovely comedy starring some of Britains finest talents as hilarious fur theives. Terry-Thomas is superb as the somewhat sexist, yet chivilerous in his own way, would-be Robin Hood. Hattie Jacques plays an ettiquette teacher who acts more like Wodehouse's boistrous Honoria Glossop. Together with Athene Seyler and Irene Handl they steal furs & give the proceeds to charity.
Other highlights include Billie Whitelaw as the ex-con maid who is kept out of the fun and Kenneth Williams in a brilliantly well-played cameo.
This is a great film to simply relax to. It's sweet, innocent, simple and very, very funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of post-war comedy Britain. 8 Jun 2011
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Make Mine Mink is based on Peter Coke's West End play Breath Of Spring. The story centres around a group of odd-ball amateurs, who led by their aging landlady Dame Beatrice Appleby {Athene Seyler}, venture into crime by way of stealing valuable fur coats and then giving the proceeds from their crimes to charity. Joining the eccentric Dame is a has-been military officer {Terry-Thomas}, a larger than life etiquette instructor {Hattie Jacques} and a batty china mender {Elspeth Duxbury}. Oddly, and crucial to the plot of course, the house keeper is an ex-convict {sexy Billie Whitelaw} who is not involved. Just as well since her boyfriend is a Copper! This sets us up for a number of delightful sequences as our "crims" blunder into one caper after another, whilst trying to avoid capture by the increasingly baffled police force. The film even has time to homage The Third Man in one particularly funny scene as Thomas' Major Rayne goes in search of a "fence" for their ill gotten gains.

There are so many great things about Make Mine Mink, but what stands out the most is that it's a testament to what good writing and a quality cast can do for a basic premise. More known for being the director of film's starring that bastion of Jerry Lewis a like British comedy, Norman Wisdom, Robert Asher keeps it simple and lets the cast run with the material. The pace never lets up and there is not one sign of filler or awkward padding. Thomas is revelling in being the sole male actor in the core group and both Jacques and Seyler light up the screen regularly {look out for an hilarious smoke bomb moment from Jacques}.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy Romp! 6 July 2008
By F. S. L'hoir TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
"Make Mine Mink" is absolutely delightful. I have removed a star only because of the full-screen ratio (4 : 3). Any character standing on the side of the screen gets cut off, which is a shame, especially when said character has dialogue. This film needs to be seen in letter-box format, but meanwhile let's thank the producers for giving us this comic gem in any format whatsoever. Other than this problem, which can be annoying, the transfer is very clear, and the sound-track is excellent.

With the exceptions of gap-toothed Terry-Thomas and the splendid Athene Seyler, many of these actors come from the zany "Carry On" flicks, and they are priceless, especially Hattie Jacques, who plays a hefty, hard-boiled professor of etiquette. "Make Mine Mink" is full of references to other movies, such as the "Third Man." And I do love the burglar, who insists that he's of the prewar school of larceny, and wouldn't think of doing bodily harm to anyone.

This comic heist film still has me laughing out loud. But the movie ought to be reproduced in its original format of wide screen so we can appreciate the fun to its fullest extent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming 3 April 2008
By JMN
Format:DVD
Delightful comedy with some of the great stars of yesteryear, Hattie Jaques, brilliant as usual, Esma Cannon(an Aussie by birth) Billie Whitelaw, one of my all time favorites. Athen Seyler and Irene Handle, I'm laughing just thinking about them.
Terry Thomas is hilarious as the so called leader of the pack of fur thieves, (is that because he is the only male in the group). Great fun and highly recommended

4.0 out of 5 stars Stealing Furs! 2 Nov 2007
By David Lusher TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
An eccentric group of residents at a boarding house (including Hattie Jacques, Billie Whitelaw, and Terry-Thomas as a retired Major) decide to inject a spot of excitement in their dull, drab lives by embarking on a series of robberies (stealing furs) and then using the proceeds for charity. Kenneth Williams has a cameo role playing a fence (although he's got the "stile", he can't get over it!). Good entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the true comedy greats. 8 Mar 2014
Format:DVD
A comedy in the same league as "Laughter in Paradise" "Comic Icons: Alastair Sim Collection [DVD]". I cannot add much to the compliments already paid this little gem beyond citing the references to charities. Early on the film the eccentric (aren't we all?) Dame Beatrice Appleby (Athene Seyler), a dedicated worker for charity, remarks on the lines that what's left over after paying off the administrators ends up where it is intended, namely for the cause in question. What a remarkable commentary on our present-day, high-profile charities where executives milk-off donations in paying themselves fat salaries.

Where these films succeed is in the spot-on characterizations, perfect timing and nuance. Great tonic for our materialistic age, giving us the opportunity to laugh at ourselves.
