When the first track kicked in i thought this was going to be an electro-rock effort similar to White Lies (not a bad thing) but on further listening this is a little cracker. The band name and album artwork says it all really. It sounds all dark, moody and menacing but at the same time a lot of the the songs still motor along at a breakneck pace with top notch pounding bass & drum backing. Leah's voice is really beautiful and is the main attraction here, albeit in a haunting and sparse way (mazzy star..ish?). She mostly speaks/whispers the vocals with occassional (excellent) lapses into full voice. All the tracks are very memorable and stay in your head for a long time. She does sometimes get very maudling but even in those quiet moments she's still riveting with a remarkable (perhaps not to everyone's taste?) quality to her singing. It lost half a star for that annoying habit of having a "secret" track...why do bands do that??? Should be 4 and a half stars for the music though.
