A must have for church leaders!!

Another great resource from the folks at REV magazine!! This book 1st offers the reasoning behind experiential learning and why it is so effective. Then it gives 25 interactive sermon illustrations, 15 interactive staff meeting illustrations, 15 interactive ideas for small group and Sunday School settings and finally 15 interactive sermon illutration ideas focusing on holidays and special occasions. Each chapter begins with a summary of the illustration including the scripture passage, key verse, theme, point, brief summary, needed supplies and preparations and a risk rating!! Especially for those of us serving in more 'traditional' churches the risk rating is very valuable!!! The indices offer organization according to topic, scripture passgae and risk number! A must have resource for anyone in church leadership.

Allowing people to apply what they learn

I really like this book and so do my students. Allowing people to apply what they learn will increase their chances of success. We have to move beyond the talking and get to teaching.
Wise teachers know that you can lead students to read but you can not make them learn. Learning occurs through the visual and hands on application of the lessons being taught. I use these in the classroom and I think ministers would benefit through an interactive congregation. The Bible does say we must be both hearers and doers of the word.

A great idea poorly executed

Make It Stick: 70 Practical Ideas for Sermons, Board Meetings, Small Group Gatherings, and Holidays
I purchased this book with the hope that it would provide ideas for worship service "installations"--active applications of biblical truth. This book is no help. In fact, it's pretty funny to imagine trying to lead a group through any of the exercises. Whoevever created this book is clueless about the dynamics of a worship service. In fact, I couldn't imagine doing these things with adults in any context. During one of our creative meetings we perused it for ideas and had a good laugh. All this for $17.99? Incredible.
