Review

'If you like a good story with great characters, if you enjoy a really good read, then you will love Sarah Shaw's 'Make It Back'. Compelling' --Wendy Robertson.

Product Description

In 1937, Muriel leaves her family in England to nurse children trapped in the Spanish Civil War. Braving the fascist bombardment, she becomes determined to help one injured boy find his sister - but she can never forget her own abandoned daughter. More than forty years later, Dee follows in the footsteps of her grandmother, inspired to overcome the hurt of rejection by her older lover and take a few risks in sex and war. Two generations apart, Muriel and Dee are driven into passion and danger in the heat and dust of south-eastern Spain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and captivating, 24 April 2009
This review is from: Make it Back (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book very much and read it in only two or three sessions as once I picked it up I found it very hard to put down. The unusual style of writing, telling two intertwined stories, had me hooked as did the strength and naivety of the two main characters. The vivid description of the civil war had me running for cover, willing the unfortunates and Muriel to survive and I understood totally Dee's desire to unearth the truth and the reasons behind her grandmothers departure to such a hostile place. A very good read indeed!

this is a really well writtin book. the main character, Muriel, goes off to nurse in the Spanish Civil war. it intertwines her story and the story of her daughter and mother she leaves behind in England, thus bringing the story forward to present time. it has strong characters and is a great adventure story, which i think both men and women enjoy.
