Synopsis
Director Jocelyn Moorhouse's film adaptation of the novel by Whitney Otto stars Winona Ryder as Finn Dodd, a Berkeley graduate student on summer hiatus at her grandmother's home to work on her thesis and ponder a marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Sam (Dermot Mulroney). Finn's grandma, Hy (Ellen Burstyn), lives with her great aunt, Glady Jo (Anne Bancroft), at their idyllic Northern California home. The two fiery women meet with seven older female relatives and close friends for a regular quilting bee, led by Anna (Maya Angelou). Over the course of the summer, Finn contemplates her future while gaining insight into love and relationships from the different members of the quilting bee. Their experiences are brought to life as each woman shares a unique tale with the confused young woman. The interwoven memories of each sage member of the quilting bee--including Constance (Kate Nelligan), Anna's daughter Mariana (Alfre Woodard), and Finn's free-spirited mother Sally (Kate Capshaw)--become lessons in love, pain, and emotional growth for Finn as the women work to make her wedding quilt. Each memory becomes a vivid flashback subtly weaving the past and present together to create a colorful collection of stories, featuring young stars including Claire Danes and Samantha Mathis as the individual women in their youth. A tribute to women's friendship and camaraderie, HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT shines with a cast of all-star actresses.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just fancy stitching!, 2 Jul 2006

(REAL NAME)
This is a film which improves the better you know it! It tells the story of a homely Quilting "Bee" who settle down to make a Wedding Quilt for the daughter of one of their circle. The theme of the quilt is "Where True Love Resides". Over the process of its creation we learn about the personal loves and lives of each of the quilters. Each has to find her own way to face her life challenges. A sister's betrayal, a passion for diving, a husband's dessertion, love of dog, love of a feckless artist and being alone on the road with nothing but an old heirloom of a quilt... I love this film. The whole thing is pulled together in the end by the quilt and a realisation that true love is often not quite where you expect it.

Yes, it's a GIRL'S film but so what? Are we inferior or something? ...and the finished quilt is beautiful!

5.0 out of 5 stars This film is amazing, 10 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I found this film incredibly moving. It follows the stories of several women who are making patches for a quilt to give to Winona Ryder's character. The women each make a patch that shows where they find their happiness, and the film goes on to show each of their stories. I cried throughout the whole film because most of the women had been betrayed by men and ended up with depressing lives. Some of my friends aren't as enthusiastic about the film as i am, but it touched my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars A group of women in America: Their lives and loves, 29 April 2001
By A Customer
Perhaps one of the hardest things to accept about life is that we have to learn to live with imperfections..... In a brilliantly honest, compelling and reflective way, this film manages to express this idea completely, yet, strangely, evoking in the audience a desire to strive for something better.

Beautiful and inspiring; I watched this film at a particular time when I felt I could have been each of the characters in some way...it affected me as much as to make me act on my impulse and change parts of my life. I would recommend this to anyone who has no illusions about love and who is moved by the idea of reflecting on life.

Most people wouldn't think their's anything exceptional about this film, which is probably why I like it; it shows ordinary people - who in their own right - are extraordinary. Read more
